Après « Tales of The Forgotten Melodies », qui fut pour beaucoup une des révélations de l’année 2005, Wax Tailor livrait au printemps 2007 “Hope & Sorrow”. Reconnu par beaucoup comme un des disques majeurs de l’année 2007, l’album s’est déjà vendu à 50 000 exemplaires en France, a été plébiscité par presse et radio (France Inter, Radio Nova, Iastar, Ferarock…) recevant même une nomination aux Victoires de la Musique et aux US indie Music awards. Dans la foulée il enregistre « Seize the day » titre phare du film « PARIS » de Cédric KLAPISCH Après une tournée 2007 de près de 100 dates à travers le monde, Wax Tailor et ses musiciens ont reprit la route début mars (Olympia sold out 4 mois à l’avance) pour une nouvelle tournée internationale.
HOPE & SORROW
Le second album est souvent présenté comme le moment de vérité pour un artiste. Avec ce nouvel opus, WT confirme son identité musicale, en 12 titres et 3 interludes. Il nous conte une nouvelle histoire laissant plus d’espace aux titres vocaux, un scénario parsemé d’invités comme autant d’acteurs au service d’une mise en scène sonore.
Dès l’introduction, l’ambiance est donnée, le son défile comme un long plan séquence posant le décor. Souvent catalogué abstract hip hop ou trip hop, WT fait sauter ces barrières, utilisant sa musique comme un langage pour conter des chroniques sonores teintées de soul, de jazz, de funk, flirtant ci et là avec une écriture pop classieuse déposée dans un écrin hip hop.
En funambule, entre « espoir et souffrance » WT semble chercher le point d’équilibre, il élargit sa palette, dessinant en musique nos dualités. Détaché de toute querelle de clocher, il ne cherche pas sa route mais la trace, n’est pas à classer dans la catégorie suiveurs mais incontestablement dans celle des artistes majeurs. Avec ce deuxième essai, WAX TAILOR confirme la dimension internationale que son premier album avait ébauché.
Les invités Charlotte SAVARY (The Man With No Soul, To Dry Up, Alien In My Belly), déjà présente sur « Tales of… » elle pose sa voix et ses mots sur 3 chansons aux ambiances bristoliennes où mélancolie et mélodie semblent liées dans un seul mouvement.
Sharon JONES (The Way We Lived), la grande dame de la soul est invitée à donner de la voix, pour une collaboration inattendue.
Ursula RUCKER (We Be), l’incontestable « prêtresse » du spoken word pose un superbe poème sur un titre aux ambiances ciselées.
VOICE (The Games You Play), la révélation outre-atlantique fait la démonstration d’une possible féminité dans le hip-hop.
Marina QUAISSE est présente depuis le début du projet et sur scène aux côtés de WT. Elle a coécrit au violoncelle « Positively Inclined », titre aux accents funk
où sont conviés les deux MC’s anglais de A STATE OF MIND.

L’histoire
Début 2004, avec « Lost The Way » son premier EP, WAX TAILOR attise la curiosité de nombreux journalistes et médias avec un projet qui repousse les frontières du hip hop orchestral.
Mars 2005, avec « Tales of The Forgotten Melodies » il persiste, et signe une musique cinématique au croisement des tendances. Le tailleur de cire recueille très vite un public large, au-delà du carcan des genres.
Les radios françaises plébiscitent le disque, les play-lists se multiplient (France INTER, NOVA, FIP, CAMPUS, FERAROCK…). WT décide de relever le défi du live électronique en donnant une résonance scénique à cet album. C’est accompagné d’une chanteuse, d’une violoncelliste et d’une mise en image qu’il sillonne l’Hexagone, faisant plus d’une soixantaine de dates, seul ou aux côté d’HERBALISER, du PEUPLE de l’HERBE, COLDCUT, DJ KRUSH…
Courant 2006, l’album sort à l’international, suivi par de nombreuses radios un peu partout en Europe, aux Etats-Unis, Canada et Asie. Fort d’un très bon accueil outre-atlantique, WT part en tournée aux côtés de RJD2, à la rencontre d’un public grandissant.
Enregistré entre la France, les Etats-Unis et l’Angleterre, « Hope & Sorrow » a été masterisé aux studios STERLING SOUND à NEW YORK par le légendaire Tom Coyne.

Hope & Sorrow
Wax Tailor, aka JC Le Saout, made a remarkable impact worldwide with his debut “Tales of the Forgotten Melodies”. A sweeping, cinematic hip-hop album that had critics citing similarities to DJ Shadow, RJD2 and Portishead, “Tales” propelled this Frenchman to stardom in his home country and his debut was heralded as Radio Nova's album of the year. Stateside, “Tales” spent 28 straight weeks in the iTunes Top Electronic Albums and remains there to date. The album topped the CMJ Hip Hop and RPM charts (16 and 13 weeks in the top 20, respec-tively) and tastemaker radio station, KEXP in Seattle, deemed it one of the best albums of 2006. The breakout single “Our Dance” was herald-ed as one of the best singles of the year in Playboy Magazine as well as iTunes.
An artist's second album is often seen as the moment of truth. Released in spring 2007“Hope & Sorrow,” (50 000 copies sold just in France) has been plebiscited by public, press & radios (nominated to French music award & US Indie music awards). Wax Tailor confirms his musical identity. Often categorized as trip-hop or down tempo hip-hop, Wax Tailor breaks musical barriers using a sonic palette to demonstrate his life chronicles tainted in soul, jazz, and funk.
The tone of “Hope & Sorrow” is set from the introduction, where sounds unwind in a long one take and finally give way to Nate Harrison’s essay from “Can I Get An Amen.” Through the course of 12 tracks and 3 interludes, he tells us a new story, unravelling like a movie scenario with vocal guests as his actors who deliver their lines to the tune of a great director.
Like his debut, “Hope & Sorrow” showcases an array of talented guest musicians. Also featured on “Tales,” Charlotte Savary’s voice finds a gentle balance of sweetness and self-confidence on “The Man With No Soul,” “To Dry Up” and “Alien In My Belly.” This songstress reminds one of Bristolian cabaret pop where melancholy and melodies intertwine. Sharon Jones, the leading figure of the neo soul movement, lets her voice soar to heights far beyond that of modern R&B on “The Way We Lived.” Ursula Rucker is the priestess of Spoken Words. A familiar of The Roots, she offers her most exciting track to date, “We Be,” a poem that epitomizes the struggles of independence. LA based rapper, Voice, one of the true discoveries of this album, expresses a femininity in Rap on “The Games You Play” that is an all too rare occurrence. Marina Quaisse embraced the Wax Tailor project from the start and here again, She co-write a song and sprinkles softness through-out with her melancholic cello playing. The Others and A State Of Mind, no strangers to the underground hip-hop scene, drop their clever verses on the funky tracks “House of Wax” and “Positively Inclined.” “On my first album I had a lot of instrumental tracks,” explains JC, “I wanted to have more vocal guests on ‘Hope & Sorrow,’ which changed the way I approached song writing, giving the songs a more pop orientation.”
JC's stage name, Wax Tailor, originated in 2004 with the release of his EP “Lost The Way.” He subsequently released his first full-length album, “Tales Of The Forgotten Melodies,” completely on his own. The album garnered critical acclaim and love from French music fans and became one of the best selling electronic releases of the year. His next move was to take his show live, with a four-piece band, and find a way to translate the cinematic feel of his music through the use of video. Building on the solid foundation in France, Wax Tailor licensed “Tales” to Decon in 2006 for North American distribution and continued touring across the globe, opening up for the likes of Aceyalone & RJD2. In 2007, in addition to the release of his sophomore effort, “Hope & Sorrow,” WT & his musiciens made a worldwide tour of a 100 shows. In 2008 after the recording of “Seize the day” the main theme from “PARIS” (Cedric Klapisch last movie), he’s on the road again for anew tour so check the schedule !
