About me:
A prolific songwriter/producer for three decades,
Wayne K. Garfield etched a permanent place for
himself in pop music culture as a key contributor to
the sound of the vaunted pop-dance collective known as
Change, a group which spawned a series of
dance-crossover hits and launched the career of Luther
Vandross (see the Harper-Collins biography,
"LUTHER-The Life and Longing of Luther Vandross" by
Craig Seymour). Garfield's best known track for
Change, "The Glow Of Love", was omnipresent both on
the club scene and Billboard Dance/Club chart in 1980
and refused to go away, enjoying another cover several
years later by jazz/R&B chanteuse Randy Crawford,
samples by several prominent hip-hoppers and gaining
recognition in Billboard's 100th anniversary issue, as
the "#3 all-time greatest
dance/club hit recording". In 2001, "The Glow Of
Love" was given new life by superstar Janet Jackson,
who re-made it into her global smash (and title
track of her CD and tour) "All For You", a
multi-chart, multi-platinum seller and Grammy winner;
as well as one of the top radio songs of the year. In
fact, "All For You" made history as the first
single-ever to be added to all major radio formats on
the day of its release. "All For You" also appears on
the triple-platinum pop cd compilation, "Now 7".
Garfield's substantial catalog contains numerous r&b
covers including Aretha Franklin's "Here We Go Again",
LFO's "Can't Have You", dance diva Candi Staton's
"When You Wake Up Tomorrow", "Chance"
and acid jazz king, Roy Ayers' provocative "2000
Black" and "Sensitize". Garfield is affiliated with
more than 100 million record sales.
Garfield began his career as a co-lead singer with
70's r&b/rock group, The Voices Of East Harlem who
toured with the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Sly and The
Family Stone, The Who, Santana, Curtis Mayfield and
Ike and Tina Turner. As a talent scout, Garfield
discovered R&B singer/songwriter/producer, Angela
Winbush (best known as producer of The Isley
Brothers), Broadway's original 'Dreamgirls' cast
member, Debye Burrell (who created the role of
Lorell), and was a prime developer of the hip-hop
supergroup, Salt-N-Pepa.
Contributing to the pioneering of hip-hop's
cross-cultural appeal, Garfield collaborated with
former Bob Dylan backup singer and ongoing head vocal
coach for American Idol, Debra Byrd, to arrange for
Dylan to
perform a duet with rap star, Kurtis Blow, on the song
"Street Rock" which appears on the 1986 Polygram album
release, Kingdom Blow.
In addition, Garfield originated the nation's first
comprehensive, federally-funded Recording Industry
Training Program (INCA) for economically disadvantaged
youth and young adults; whose business model was
selected for national replication by former
President Jimmy Carter's Advisory Council On Domestic
Policy. As a consultant, Garfield works with artists,
producers and investors who seek record deals, career
guidance and multi-media exposure, as well as
entrepreneurs who explore the digital broadband arena
on a global platform.
In the world of sports, Garfield is a respected
international pro basketball promoter and player
representative.
