Watch a brief video introducing Kevin Rudd's vision for Australia:
About me: Hello, I’m Wayne Swan, Treasurer of Australia in the Rudd Labor Government. Thanks for visiting my MySpace and taking the time to get to know me better! Here you can find some information about me, and what I've been up to!
ABOUT WAYNE SWAN
Wayne Swan, Treasurer of Australia, is passionately concerned about where Australia will be in ten year’s time.
The 53 year old Queenslander, educated at Nambour High School (the same school attended by Kevin Rudd), believes eleven years of neglect and complacency have failed to make the most of the opportunities Australia has had. Australia now has a treasurer who is setting our country up for the future.
While the mining boom and strongest global economic growth in thirty years has propelled the Australian economy along, too many working Australians are struggling to get ahead.
Wayne’s vision of a prosperous and fair Australia goes back a long way. Growing up on the Sunshine Coast he was both surfer and scholar. He won a scholarship to university, studied economics and arts and was awarded an honours degree in government.
He went on to lecture in government, worked with Special Minister of State Mick Young and former Queensland premier Wayne Goss. He was state secretary of the Queensland branch of the ALP before being elected to Federal Parliament in 1993.
The Treasurer is universally recognised as a workaholic, who has as good a knowledge of the issues debated around the kitchen table as the boardroom table. When asked how Labor would win government, he famously replied: ‘we’ve just got to get up earlier in the morning than the Government and go to bed later.’
For the last three years he’s done just that, travelling the country to reinforce Labor’s economic credentials and its commitment to take Australia forward with prosperity and fairness.
In practical terms Wayne has championed the need for a world class education system and a tax system that rewards, not punishes, hard work and enterprise.
In what’s become a Swan mantra, Wayne says it’s time Australians got fairness and honesty from their leader. Following the November 2007 election, Kevin 07 became the Prime Minister of Australia. Wayne became Treasurer.
There's not much time for surfing anymore, but you can be assured he's got a sturdy board and lots of sunscreen when you catch Wayne battling the heat of the Parliamentary debate, and the rising wave of inflation!! Wayne spends his time preparing our economy for the challenges ahead and working for a fairer Australia for all working families.
Sorry I haven't commented you for a while, congratulations on winning your seat and for Labor winning parliament!
It's not really something that you need to worry about, but my mother is moving to Sudan for 2 years because she is unable to get a job in Victoria because she is a qualified primary school teacher. She has applied for stacks of jobs, has been teaching for over 35 years and has given up all other hope for a job in Australia.
Turns out, to hire her, would be equal to hiring two first year graduate teachers. I have to admit, it saddens me that our country can't afford to teach primary school children effectively with distinguished teachers because of the rate of funding that schools receive.
I know you're doing a great job and are working for the long term achievements for the country. For that I congratulate you. It's admirable in my eyes.
ive read your book and did my biography for english on you. your doing a great job for australia and i think the greatest country in the world will get even better.
G'day Wayne, Congratulations on your first Budget last nioght. Great the Rudd Government will be investing in Education, Healthg & Infrastucture. Great job mate. Jason
Wayne, quality budget, i really think that you where spot on with responding to the tragic inflationary mess of an economy left by the now opposition party, although i must admit the means testing on solar panel, really thought that was a poor call, seeing as we are in the midst global crisis.
G'day mate, Thanks for the add! All the very best with the economy and all, not that we ever need to worry. Nice job with the budget, by the way! No doubt we'll be looking forward to many successful ones in the future. Yours in friendship, Patrick.
Hi Wayne, Listened to Greg's Interview with you on www.4bc.com.au I agree that we need to invest in Education, Skills & Infrustructure so that our nation can be more productive. Jason
Mr Swan,I never thought the day would come for me to say I so ashamed to say I voted Labor all my life as do my family and friends. I have been so upset today to hear the news that your party is going to scrap the one off carers bonus introduced by the late opposition.Shame and disguist is what i feel not only for myself but for the many dedicated carers who in my eyes are saints and angels... I care for my elderly mum who suffers from heart failure and breast cancer and is so sick... I never will nor won;t put my mum in care and would rather die than put her into a system of under staffed under funded aged care that also has been neglected by the people running our country. I work as a retail assistant also the lowest paid individuals,I had to give up full time work as my mum got worse and needed care. I only am able to work 25 hrs a week under the centerlink rules and I only work 38 hrs a fortnight I recieve a benifit from centerlink to care for mum which I appreciate, but gone are my commisions, bonuses etc... I still have my own debts that I thought I would be able to maintain but was I wrong and so it seems to all the pensioners and carers I meet every day...sometimes I think what country are we in it used to be the lucky country but now??? I see what pensioners live on and I am so ashamed these people built this wonderful country with blood sweat and tears... The carers bonus was heaven sent to these battlers and the dedicated parents and friends of the elderly, disabled in this country. Mr Swan please reconsider this cost cutting attack on the under dogs...I am sure there are other places where money can be saved, and why is it that we seem to be bringing more people to this country if we cannot care for our own elderly and sick...I think that the Labor Party is becoming more Liberal every day and I don't want to have to stop being a supporter to the party that I believe was for the battlers...Regards Sharon.
