Worst Case Ontario plays antagonistic New York rock that has delighted national radio stations in Boston and Providence; yielded glowing reviews from Deli Magazine, Powerpopaholic.com and other zines/e-rags; and performed at such venues as Mercury Lounge, Glasslands, Union Pool, Knitting Factory, Crash Mansion, CBGBs and Pianos, as well as Philadelphia's M Room and Khyber.
The band's earliest songs were recorded by guitarist/vocalist Sam Weisberg, in a Japanese beetle-infested room in Oberlin, Ohio, circa 2001. Sleepy yet overdriven, with a rawness that would shame Beat Happening, the demo was recorded under the name "Sam the Jew and His Fostex 4-Track." In 2003, Weisberg showed the songs to bassist Tater Read, whom he met at an NYC private school teaching job, and was promptly taught the art of listening to other people's ideas. Drummer Drew Eastmead joined in late 2005 and helped cut most of the songs to ADD-worthy lengths. In the fall of 2006, guitarist John MacDonald (also of Oberlin College fame) emerged from the dregs of Philly, with more effects pedals than body fat. The band soon re-emerged under the moniker Worst Case Ontario.
The band's first album, “Burning Politely,” was recorded between January and August 2007, engineered and mixed by Gregg Rossetti and Rich Skibinsky of Suspyre and mastered by Len Monachello of All Night Chemists.
Read and Eastmead were respectively replaced by Joe Grasso and Tim Perzan in 2008. The new lineup has completed the EP "Smallcraft" which is available in limited vinyl prints and will be sold in CD/mp3 format shortly .
Praise for "Burning Politely":
"Worst Case Ontario has melodies and guitar riffs that seem to be created from the beerbelly of a broken hearted emoticon."
-Ben Meredith, URB Magazine
"These guys use every toy on the guitar amp...the kind of alternative power pop that will appeal to fans of Miracle Legion and Bob Mould."
-Aaron Kupferberg, Powerpopaholic
"New York rock after it learns to ditch the pretense...one of the better '90s-inspired indie outfits of late."
-Thomas J. Olsen, Deli Magazine
"Reinvigorates a sound that once dominated mixed tape nights everywhere...reminding us why the slacker spirit never dies."
-Frederick Foxtrott, FrederickFoxtrott.com
"So perfectly earnest that it's hard not to feel charmed...maintains a steady laidback vibe that tastes better over time, like a hotdish...these boys are clever."
-Lara Crombie, We Heart Music
"Messy, noisy rock that I cannot sit still to...can be compared to Nada Surf, Spoon and maybe a little I Am Kloot."
-Erica James, Unbound Culture, Unbound Culture
"Reminds me of Walt Mink...has an early '90s college radio sound that I love."
