Hard hitting and full of bounce, this rock/power pop four piece from Oxford have been snatching attention away from the rest since forming in 2005. Gritty vocals, thumping beats and sharp guitars aside - “there are surprisingly few acts who can just plug in and sound as charmingly natural as this” (OxfordBands.com).
Giving venues a regular pummelling in the promotion of new material from their forthcoming full-length album ‘VS the DJ’, The Fontaines relentlessly seek out new ways to turn as many people as possible onto what they do. With radio appearances scheduled, festival dates on the horizon and plans to distribute a variety of promotional singles and EPs in support of VS the DJ, this group have massive aspirations for 2008 and beyond.
Firm friendships born from growing up together in the sleepy villages of North Oxfordshire make this foursome sound-as-a-pound – despite the bearing rural life has had on their relative positions in the style queue. Aaron (22, lead guitar), Inky (21, lead vocals/guitar), Joe (16, drums) and Ness (22, bass guitar) demonstrate one of the worst conflict of hairstyles ever seen before on stage! The successful mismatch of sideburns / afro / shaggy mullet / attack of the straighteners working together in follicular harmony must be seen to be believed.
Musically, these guys and girl fuse all-out rock and chilled-out bop-along-pop with a set full of tunes varying from the statemental March “morality ‘aint no pedigree” to the quirky, confessional Modern Man “I’ve a fash-ion-able-bobble-hat and a set of gloves to match”. Always jumping at chances to prove themselves The Fontaines have played well over 70 gigs in Oxfordshire, Warwickshire and London, gracing the same stages as The Enemy, Supergrass and Vincent Vincent and the Villains. They have played on the same bill as signed bands such as Indica Ritual and Fearne and collectively alongside Amy Winehouse, Robert Plant, The Pretenders and Texas.
Highlights of their career to date include playing to audiences of over one thousand people and appearing at events and venues such as Jericho Tavern (Oxford), Cox’s Yard (Stratford-upon-Avon) and Emma’s Trust Festival 2007. Gigs of note in 2008 include London appearances both in Soho and also at Café 1001 on the well-known Brick Lane (where Radiohead recently staged a free gig in promotion of their latest album ‘In Rainbows’).
