One And The Same are a Melbourne-based four piece - violin, guitar, bass & drums - who play clean, sparse, emotionally charged, twangy dirges laced with urban story telling and a liberal dose of black humour.
The Dandelion EP was recorded with Craig Pilkington at Audrey Studios and features Keirnan Box (Augie March/Blackeyed Susans) on keyboards, Ken Gardiner (Augie March/Blackeyed Susans) on trumpet and Claudia Schneider (Diving Bell) on backing vocals
Terry O’Reilly (vocals/guitar) was born in Moe, a coal mining town about three hours from Melbourne. He moved to the big smoke, to get away from the big smoke, and learnt to play guitar under the tutelage of legendary Springvale cabaret performer, Johnny Ardley – a sort of cross between Wayne Newton, Glen Campbell and Barbara Streisand.
Steve Staughton (violin) claims his influences lie in those formative years sitting around the pianola with the Latvian neighbors singing songs from the old country. An accomplished pianola player himself, until a severe Achilles tendon injury ended his dreams of becoming a virtuoso, Steve is philosophical about life’s vicissitudes and is now comfortable with his psychofiddle contributions.
Simon ‘Diamond’ Mariani (bass) comes from the thriving London band scene where he has shared guitars with Gary Numan and was very near to getting a spot on the infamous Duran Duran clip, ‘Girls on Film’, but was deemed to be too much competition for the other Simon. He also plays guitar with local Melbourne band, The Last Five Minutes.
James Staughton (drums) is the architect of the band. His preference for skin over metal gives the band a very earthy and primal sound. James conducts ‘’percussion retreats’’ in the Yarra Valley for corporate clients working through issues of creativity and sexuality. He also has a caustic sense of humour. The guys were almost lynched on their tour of Tasmania when James suggested to the punters that they should’ve charged per head at the door instead of per person.
James Staughton (drums) & Terry O’Reilly (vocals/guitar) have played together in 3 bands – Honeywagon, Cream of Tartar and One And The Same - over the past 10 years.
