What got you started in music? Well... My dad's a guitar god, my brother is a bass machine, and I wanted to join the party! My whole family has been musical way before I ever came to exist. There's always music playing in our house, and even through the TV commercials my dad has an acoustic guitar at his side ready to noodle. I've been singing along through it all. Though since I was surrounded by such amazing musicians and vocalists ( Uncle Ron, Cousin Meg and all the Opera Authorities from the older generation) I was VERY intimidated and didn't think much of my singing ventures. I've always wanted to be a part of it all, but didn't quite know how. At around 17 or so I was singing along to the blues during a car ride with my mom when she simply said "you can do this." Within the next few weeks my Dad had me out to sing some SRV with his band and I've been at it ever since! Singing is my therapy, and the best way I can find express my true emotions, without it I think I may have combusted long ago...

How did you come to join Phat Cats? I've known Jason and Michelle for a while now, and our past bands fit together splendidly. We've all been jamming together since we met. When Phat Cats first met up they were looking for some vocal, Jason gave me a jingle, which I'm very glad he did and I was happy to answer the call.

What are some of your primary musical influences? Janis Joplin, Odetta, Etta James, KoKo Taylor, Irma Thomas, Amy Winehouse, Led Zeppelin, AL Green, Bessie Smith, Grace Slick, The Mamas and The Papas, Sam & Dave, the list goes on....

What bands have you played in previously? Little Sister and the Bullies, and our short lived merger group, Two Chicks Four Tits

What do you think you contribute to the band? I think it may be more appropriate to ask my band mates this...

Based on your experience, what philosophies have you developed in regards to music? Keep trying, if one idea doesn't work quite right, keep going until you find it. It's always there, Just don't forget that some times you may have to dig a little deeper. And who knows, sometimes you may suprise yourself and un-bury something amazing. It's a constant exploration with no end in sight.

What is your favorite color? Hmmmm, Green?

Favorite food? potatoes and bacon

Favorite movie? Shawshank Redemption, Blues Brothers, We are Spinal Tap, I watch a lot of stupid movies.

Favorite type of cat? 3 leggers

What do you see in the future for Phat Cats, and of your musical career? Success!!! I'm a fan of every single one of my bandmates, and truely think that together we can do anything we set our minds to. Oh and I'll just second Bev's answer :)

What is the strangest thing you have ever done? Oh geez, I played on top of a house boat in the lake near Blarney Island.

Favorite Phat Cats song: Lochness Monstrosity

What got you started in music? When I was seven I wanted to play the upright bass so I could play the theme from jaws. My mother said no, so I decided to play the sax because of the talking owl I saw on Sesame Street playing it. He said I would have to put down the duckie if I wanted to play the saxophone. I sucked until I was about 19, along the way I picked up some other instruments.

How did you come to join Phat Cats? I was at the Halloween party of my ex bassist’s girlfriend. During this I encountered Michelle singing son of a preacher man, which was weird because my drummer and I had been discussing how we needed a vocalist if we wanted to cover that tune. During a brief stay in my band Jason came to one of my practices and we jammed for a while, the rest is history.

What are some of your primary musical influences? Joshua Redman, Sonny Rollins, Dexter Gordon, Ian Underwood, Kenny Garret, Ian Anderson, Herbie Mann, John Coltrane, ugh too many to type, etc.

What bands have you played in previously? Joe Pesci and the High Rollers, Monkey Funktion Express, Waste Basket, Like of the Conchords, SplashBack.

What do you think you contribute to the band? I play the saxophone…stupid.

Based on your experience, what philosophies have you developed in regards to music? “The only good thing to come from the church was the music”- George Carlin.

What is your favorite color? Green

Favorite food? grilled cheese

Favorite movie? Clue

Favorite type of cat? pussy

What do you see in the future for Phat Cats, and of your musical career? I see phat cats goin on tour for a while, gaining a good following, because the music is very universal. Out of all the bands I have played in, I have the most confidence in this one. As for my career, we will see.

What got you started in music? Hearing B-ha of "admiral of black" and Phil "Lobster Newberg" play "master of puppets" when I was 14 at a party. I knew then I had to pick up a BASS and jam with these cats. A whole spunk load of sick Jammage followed. My Dad also pushed me to play, he is the drummer in "Betty Floored", he kicks ass.    About PHAT CATS

Phat Cats was started in late 2008 with the original members Bev, Paul, and former member and co-founder Doug. The group originally had no idea the type of musical force that would be unleashed from the coming together of these players. Soon they would ad Jason on bass, whom they found via craigslist, and he would bring with him Laura Loo to belt out some mad vocals. With these players together in a seemingly complete band, massive bouts of creativity would ensue. All seemed complete until one member would suggest adding on a sax player to the mix. Joe Sax would eventually be stolen by Phat Cats to complete the sextet All seemed absolutely perfect until one day a text was sent to Jason from former guitarist Doug, revealing his intentions to quit the band. This would open up the ever important guitar slot, and time was of the essence. After only three auditions a guitar player was found, who lets just say did not work out. Bullshit ensued for a while, and Phat Cats ended up again in need of a new guitarist. Thanks to the magic of craigslist, after a week Mark was added to the lineup. The sextet comprised of Laura, Jason, Paul, Bev, Mark, and Joe, has evolved at an alarming rate in a short time, and are continuing to morph into a completely different band. Phat Cats continues to set the standard for Chicago music by emphasizing professionalism, musicianship, and showmanship.
