Track 'Osumi' featured on the 'IMRO New Sounds' CD compilation July 2009
Sounds Like
What the press have to say:
The Scene, Daily Star Sep 09 "Fans of Fight Like Apes and Grand Pocket Orchestra may have found the last in their holy trinity"
State.ie - March 09 "Their synth-heavy electro rock is stunningly delicate and naïve at times, showcasing the bands impressive ability to swap roles and instrumentation... in songs like Winter there’s potential practically oozing from the three of them."
Analogue Magazine - January 09
"Sleep Thieves play sweet sweet electro pop incorporating lot’s of synths, drum machines and catchy guitar riffs... (and) are definitely one of the more promising new Irish acts in 2009."
RATED - Music Column, News of the World June 09
"(Sleep Thieves) create an impressively polished sound...
they've built up a loyal fan base and are a very promising electronic act, representing a breath of fresh air on the live music scene in Dublin."
EP review
Olaf Tyaransen, Hotpress, June 09
"This excellent four-track EP from hotly tipped Irish electro three-piece Sleep Thieves feactures synths, samplers, guitar riffs, drum machines and gloriously honeyed dual vocals. Presumably last track 'This is Not an Exit' is inspired by Bret Easton Ellis' American Psycho, but for the most part it's all very blissed out Cocteau Twins: 'If you come to my house we can watch the rain falling down/if you come to my house I can read you poetry aloud' I'm so there!"
Nialler9 blog, MAP playlist June 09
"Taken from It Was Only A Satellite, the debut EP from this Dublin three-piece, Osumi showcases the bleep-assisted electronic edge of their sound before diverting into heady post-rock guitar progressions, while singer Sorcha repeats a mantra atop like a prototype Natasha Khan. Their yearning indie-electronic-pop sound is reminiscent of Lali Puna, Broadcast and The Notwist."
The Irish Daily Star, July 8th 2009
"With a girl/boy vocal interplay underpinned by a dreamy atmosphere, Dublin's Sleep Thieves are already in a league of their own. And the coming year is likely to see them go up another few notches."
Drop-D.ie EP review July 09 "Debut EP It Was Only A Satellite is a heady mix of synths, guitar riffs and lush vocal melodies...(Osumi) is a slice of electronic perfection...they have proven they have enough musical muscle and ingenuity to back up the fawning praise they have received to date"
"Good sense of humour, open minded, seeking like minded musicians to form electronic tinged band. Must really like tea."
So (roughly) went the ad that gravitated the artists currently known as Sleep Thieves together over the summer of 2008. They met, at a crowded bar and talked long and late about music, past & future. They traded opinions and half-baked notions and found that there was much to be gained from putting their heads together, so soon after they convened across a cluttered room full of keyboards, synths, leads and laptops.
After a promising start to their existence they are looking to bridge the gap between quirky-indie and dancey-electro, according to Analogue Magazine Sleep Thieves “create music that in one moment trips lightly along in a swirling hush of gentle vocals, dainty keys and stomping electronic beats, while the next moment swells with driving electronic drums and growling, dirty synths.”
Since their live debut in November 2008, Sleep Thieves have played some notable shows including the 2009 IMRO Showcase, Club AC30 in Whelans, with Saint Etienne in Cork Opera House and Dark Room Notes at their album launch, with international artist Midori Hirano and at the Fight Like Apes curated Ruby Sessions shows in Doyle’s, Dublin. Many of Ireland’s most prominent publications have commented on the band’s potential, with their track ‘Osumi’ being selected in the Hot Press list of ‘Best Irish songs of 2008’ poll, the same magazine suggesting to "watch out for Sleep Thieves in 2009". Prominent Irish Times journalist Jim Carroll also profiled Sleep Thieves as his 'act to watch’ in the Oxegen edition of The Ticket in June 2009.
The band released 'It Was Only A Satellite' in June 09, a four song EP that showcases both the gentler and the dancier end of their sonic spectrum. Tracks from the EP have been played on stations such as BBC Introducing on BBC 6Music, Resonance FM & Diesel Radio in the UK and stations such as Phantom FM & 2FM here at home. Sleep Thieves were profiled on The Listening Post on Phantom FM in June. Recently the track 'Osumi' was selected for the Music Alliance Pact playlist of June 2009 (alongside artists such as Janelle Monae, Phoenix, Fanfarlo) appearing on 25 prominent worldwide blogs worldwide and was featured on the IMRO New Sounds CD.
The band released 'City Lights' as a download single in September, which will be accompanied by their first video available on site, YouTube etc in November, and will continue to hone their energetic live performance throughout the year!
