   About The ABC Club
Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Shoegaze guitars and ethereal vocals are a well proven combination, and The ABC Club don't put a step wrong to disprove this. Having played at Leeds Festival in 2007 the band are racking up performances supporting bands such as iForwardRussia!, Grammatics, Glasvegas and Make Model in cities around their native Halifax. The youngsters are months away from being free of educational struggle and a time when The ABC Club will spread their music to the wider world.

THE AMBER SLEEP

Wednesday 12th November @ The Library, Leeds, doors 8:00, £4

SPOKES
Manchester's Spokes will provide this fine evening with mostly instrumental, always captivating post-rock aceness. This is not your average quiet-loud band, they play with an edge of longing and sadness rarely seen in this genre and their 'People Like You Like You' album is indeed a fine piece of work that comes highly recommended. Recent slots at the Big Chill and Rockness festivals prove these lovely peeps are on the march.
http://www. myspace. com/spokessound

THE FRENCH QUARTER
One of Scotland's finest upcoming bands... soon to be up there with The Twilight Sad and Frightened Rabbit. These young gentlemen cross Interpol-esque rhythms with soaring walls of guitar and a melancholy edge for good measure. It's their first time in Leeds so don't miss out.
http://www. myspace. com/thefrenchquarter

THE AMBER SLEEP
This beautiful string-based band centred around Graham Jones' brooding vocals create some quite wonderous acoustic passages. A little Nick Drake and a little Antony and the Johnsons and a lot of heart.

Hauschka
Having studied classical piano for ten years, Dusseldorf-based pianist/composer Volker Bertelmann's work as Hauschka is based upon a playful exploration of the possibilities of the 'prepared' piano. His resulting tracks are vivid, unconventional pieces made in a spirit of playful research-enthusiasm, which he's taken around the world - in the USA with Múm, in Japan with Colleen, and a debut, sold-out London show with Max Richter. Hauschka's music is a thing of beauty - intertwined melodies and rythyms that flit between gorgeously lush and complex and stunning minimalism.

Gareth S. Brown
With influences as diverse as Eastern European folk music, funeral marches and jewellery boxes, Gareth creates gorgeous work of layered beauty with nods towards Philip Glass, Terry Riley and Michael Nyman as well as latter day travellers such as Max Richter, Yann Tiersen and Aphex Twin.

Saturday: 8/11/2008 @ The Holy Trinity Church, Leeds. Doors 8.30pm.

A Forest of Sound presentation. £5 adv / £7 on the door.

Two fine gigs to lead us into a golden autumn….

Wednesday 15 October, 8.00 - Apollo 15 presents The Lazy Darlings + Lights + The Birdman Rallies + Travels By Telephone: Tickets: £5/£4 flyer/NUS

“Timeless, country upbeat catchy pop..hints of the beach boys and the kinks and sounds equally 'now'. that the lazy darlings have done this on their first recordings bodes well for the future” whisperinandhollerin. Lights - "enchanting and bewildering" THE FLY. The Birdman Rallies - "Layers of varied instrumentation from guitar, bass and drums to lovely trumpet flourishes, tinkling xylophones and exotic electronic noises" -Sandman. Travels By Telephone - Jamie Wilson describes his musical history and current project thus... "Sporadically in experimental post-pub collective Manta. I then got hold of an acoustic guitar and started writing songs."

Friday 17 October, 8.00 - Apollo 15 and Please Please You presents Helene, Mossyrock, The Sorry Kisses + Burial In The Sky: Tickets: £5/£4 flyer/NUS

Stunning London 5 piece have new album ‘Heliotrope’ about to hit the shelves. This is pretty much a one off chance to catch them live. ‘Meditative Velvet Underground-style rhythms to intimate wordplay, lilting mantras or startling wall of guitar.’ Mojo. Brooklyn based two piece Mossyrock return with their oddball, folksy electronic pop. And – The Sorry Kisses; of whose album Manchester Music Online wrote; "Every track is a complete, infectious example of good, edgy song writing." Burial In The Sky have said their recent gigging experiences have “influenced us more than a crystal meth jag with Derren Brown.” Brilliant!

Sunday Funday @ Love Apple, Bradford City Centre

Sep 29 2008 6:01 PM

Sunday Funday is the not-for-profit inaugural post-clubbing chill-out monthly sunday evening event mixing live acts, DJs, dance, spoken word and circus in a student-friendly Bradford arty city centre venue. Translocating the summer festival vibe into the Love Apple Café Bar (near the Alhambra Theatre - see the map on our MySpace), action packed with all the fun of the fair, Sunday Funday is a great excuse to ditch the crap sunday night telly, and party with no stress. Open-minded, multi-cultural, multi-genre, you'll hear just about anything at our gigs. Whether it's funk, punk, reggae, hip hop, house, techno, dub, breaks, meaningful accoustic sets, or bitesized chunks of world music, we're down with all chilled-out vibes.

To reduce our carbon footprint, we showcase local acts as possible, giving maximum exposure to the stars of tomorrow, in conjunction with Fresh Milk (the Wild West Yorkshire music facilitators), we're helping new artists gain grass roots exposure. On the Sunday October the 5th bill, there's Freyed Knot headlining, plus Divine Shakras, Harris, DJ Shi'me, DJ Immi, Flloyd de Sousa, Meats, and many, many more. This time there's breakdance crew the Soul Monkeys, and future performances will include belly dance and burlesque, and live performance art. Entry is always a mere £3, with beer/lager/real ale at £2 a pint, and fresh veggie and meat hot dogs to keep thirst and hunger under check. There's no dress code, fancy dress optional but welcome.

We're not funded or sponsored in any way, and rely on the kindness and generosity of our able volunteers, so if you want Sunday Funday to suceed, show your support by turning up at the Love Apple carnival between 5 and 11pm and having one hell of a good time. Turn up, tune in, and chill!!!

Peace 'n' Love Apples,

Sunday Funday Crew

VOLUNTARY BUTLER SCHEME + Modeliste + Ophelia

THE VOLUNTARY BUTLER SCHEME
DEBUT EP – TRADING THINGS IN
RELEASED ON 21st JULY ON THE LOWEST LAYER OF THE TRIFLE RECORDINGS

A one-man assembly of bold and vibrant caricatures in sound; The Voluntary Butler Scheme makes its debut with the EP Trading Things In released on 21st July on The Lowest Layer Of The Trifle Recordings. The single has been picked as Steve Lamaq’s Single of the week and the release builds on recent sessions for BBC 6 Music, BBC Radio 1 & 2.

22-year-old Rob Jones aka The Voluntary Butler Scheme takes a wry look at life’s shortcomings and styles a plasticine pop of ruggedly organic and excitingly abstract songs. Opening track Trading Things In is lyrically vivid English-summer pop. With ambitiously realised harmonies, and pleasingly shabby arrangement, it recognises the truly defining symptoms of love and devotion; Broccoli, running shoes and bad MP3 playlists.

With The Eiffel Tower And The BT Tower, Rob welcomes a swinging, ska inflected Motown group into his Midland home, “The BT Tower is the first thing that catches your eye when you go into Birmingham. Some sort of warped Midlands’ pride made me want to put it in the title.” The apparent pop soul whimsy of Hot Air Balloon Heart, shares the eccentric gifts of Nilsson and more immediately Gruff Rhys, as it spins classic songwriting into new, surreal and otherworldly shapes - “I’ve been dreaming of you so often, makes my hot air balloon heart soften…”

Hailing from Stourbridge, Rob’s inauguration as a solo artist was inspired – albeit indirectly – by fellow mid-lander Pato Banton. Under the misapprehension that collaboration with the lyrical toaster might be on the cards, Rob wrote and recorded an album’s worth of songs.

We're heading out of London with our new record and a Thirst for Jager...

Our second single 'Cream' is out now!

It's got "more hooks than a butcher's shop window", according to Artrocker, and Neon Buzz say it's "a ramshackle pop riot mixing elements of a million different musical genres into one four minute slice of party perfection."

If vinyl's your bag, order the lovely 7" from Filthy Little Angels now!..

Hit iTunes for juicy mp3s: You can pick up both our singles as a bundle for just £3.

Please buy the record and love it to bits...
