The Great Depression was formed in 1996 in Madison, Wisconsin by Todd Casper and Thomas Cranley as a vehicle for psychic exploration and subversion.
Their first album, ‘Heaven is Becoming,’ was written in filthy bars and recorded on four-track cassette machines between Brooklyn and Minneapolis. It was eventually committed to two-inch tape at Pachyderm Studio in 1998. Critics called it ‘Hauntingly beautiful,” “Lush” and “Apocalyptic”. It was placed into heavy rotation at 200 college radio stations across America.
In the summer of 2001 they returned to Pachyderm for an unexpected 15 Month stay that resulted in the classic recording, ‘Unconscious Pilot’. (The album depicts a daring escape from a brainwashed America during the outbreak of an unspecified war). Unconscious Pilot was proclaimed, “Fitfully gorgeous” and “An understated masterpiece”. It also earned them a long-term record deal with the legendary Indy label, Fire Records of London.
In 2004 they landed in Aberdeen, Scotland where they finished the loosely hypnotic and subversive, ‘Preaching to the Fire’. The record was dubbed ‘Album of the year” by critics in both the U.K and America. It was also hailed as “An incredible creative statement” and “One of the best of the genre”.
The group is now based in Copenhagen, Denmark and includes Jacob Kofler (bass) and Al Fleming (drums, programming, synths). The new album, ‘Forever Altered’ and a series of 7- inch singles will be available world wide throughout 2008.
The “Whatever You’re Building ep”, on lovely, 10 inch, limited edition vinyl will also be available world wide in May on Phisteria Records (Copenhagen).
Hello friend! Come over to our page to see the updated lyrics and tour dates. While you're there, take time to rank your favorite Pinch Dogs songs... (we love you, too.) See ya' soon!
The Great Depression is an artistic venture; and, as such, should be regarded as a successful, wholly-owned business entity, not a subsidiary, relation, part, or parcel of Jonathan Aikery Productions, Minneapolis (blechh), MN, USA- who sucks.
Todd, I wonder if you ever saw the list of anagrams that are possible from TGD
I recall "earth pot greediness" was one . . . .
Hope you're well. I've gotten every girlfriend I've ever had hooked on the band, does that mean I get to be the merch guy some day? That someday in the distant future when you someday mount a tour . . . .
