(Rock Open Semis Review) - The first thing to say about this band is they were one of the tightest and professional sounding bands of the night. They held the audience with a series of driving infectious tunes. The Bass player/singer was in command of proceedings and stood out as they're driving force. Allowing the guitarist plenty of freedom. The drummer too was spot on, working hard to complete the trio. With songs such as "Secret Scandals " and " Jail Bird" they showed themselves to be on the pulse with current trends. I would say that maybe they were the best band of the night, if it wasn't for one thing. Their just too close to the Artic Monkeys for comfort for me. It was almost like listening the tracks the Monkeys left off they're albums. I'd like to see them move away from the shadow of the Monkeys and create their own sound. They may not have to change much as they have all the tools to do so and it'll be well worth listening to. Saying that I still think this is a really good band, well worth checking out if you see them coming to a town near you. Your not going to be disappointed.
(Rock Open Finals Review) - Third on the bill tonight was The Maker. This three piece band clearly had the crowd in their hands right from the start. Out of all the bands playing tonight The Maker had the most consistent set of songs. Each one tailored to work the audience into a dancing frenzy. I know that they have had a fair amount of stick about their Artic Monkeys comparison , but having been to see the Antarctic Monkeys earlier this year I can tell you that The Maker deliver the same energy, power and crowd reaction as you'd find there and all without doing one A.M. cover. I'm sure in time they'll find the right balance of influences in the future which will set them apart from the shadow cast by the Monkeys. And their 'Secret Scandal' song looks a strong contender to start that break away. It looks to be a fan favourite already. And I'm sure they'll be more to come.
Grimsby Telegraph - Immingham three piece band The Maker has a full brit rock sound and features the first of a number of lead singing bass guitarists. A touch of Bowiesque vocally. An energetic band.
Flatrabbit Music - Immingham band The Maker, a 3-piece, put together a half-hour set of energetic indie tunes with an Arctic Monkeys twist resulting in near mosh-pit conditions at the front of the stage. Seany looked as though he had fronted the band for years, Lee Smith put in some great work on a lovely clean sounding Strat and Andy's drumming, complete with a tremendous Specials-esque sounding snare, held it all together.
