About me:
WDCR – Dartmouth College Radio
WDCR AM 1340 is the Official Dartmouth College Radio Station, locally owned and operated by the Trustees of Dartmouth College. WDCR is a student run activity on the campus of Dartmouth College.
Dartmouth Broadcasting is also the home of the Dartmouth Sports Network, Dartmouth Broadcast News, the Dartmouth Election Network, and our commercial sister station WFRD - 99Rock!
Dartmouth Broadcasting is a real business with all aspects managed and operated by students under the Company Operations Manager. It is one of the few "real world" experiences Dartmouth College has to offer, and it is first and foremost a place to learn. It is an educational experience unlike any other available here at Dartmouth College.
Dartmouth Broadcasting operates as the umbrella organization that runs Dartmouth's two radio stations, AM1340 (WDCR) and 99Rock (WFRD-FM). We are COMPLETELY RUN BY STUDENTS under our Operations Manager. All management positions are filled by students and all the important decisions affecting Dartmouth Broadcasting are decided by the Student Directorate, which is comprised of the heads of all departments including the Operations Manager under Dartmouth Broadcasting.
Dartmouth Broadcasting is financially self-sufficient and receives no funds from the college to operate. The money for our half-million dollar operating budget comes solely from local and national clients and investors who advertise on our commercial sister station 99Rock (WFRD-FM).
The History of WDCR
Dartmouth Broadcasting began in 1920s with the ambitions of a few Dartmouth College students that decided to give a new technology called 'radio' a try. The first broadcast occurred over copper wires linked in all the dorms. The station used the call letters WDBS [Dartmouth Broadcasting System].
The name changed to WDCR [Dartmouth College Radio] when it became an officially licensed station of the Federal Communications Commission and its first official broadcast at 1340 AM was March 4th, 1958. Dartmouth Broadcasting began officially operating WFRD [FM Radio at Dartmouth] 99.3 FM in the late fall of 1976. The two stations have always been completely managed by students. The vast majority of the on-air personnel are students, although there are some exceptions. This is an unusual example of commercial college radio.
