W.E. Fest has for more than a decade been a multi-day, totally DIY, volunteer-run extravaganza in Wilmington NC that always takes place during the week of Memorial Day Weekend. Now, thanks to everyone's enthusiastically enthusiastic enthusiasm, we're also going to have one W.E. Fest day a month - a series of bigass, dirt cheap multifloor extravaganzas called "W.E. Fest Fridays", generously sponsored by the fine folks at Surf 98.3, with individual stages booked by various local luminaries. This, folks, is the tits.
The first W.E. Fest was held in 1996 and since then independent bands of all shapes, sizes, colors, and sounds have played this Fest, made friends, and gone home to network, share gigs, keep in touch, and make W.E. Fest part of their lives. Musicians have travelled from as far away as Canada, England, Ireland, West Africa and Japan to participate.
2009's annual WE Fest will take place from Thursday, May 21 through Monday, May 25, and is already confirmed at the Soapbox Laundro Lounge and The French Quarters in downtown Wilmington, NC, but we hope to get all of downtown Wilmington involved by the time next May rolls around. Show up at our W.E. Fest Fridays and help us make that happen!
Past musical participants have included Lamb Of God, Mae, The Dismemberment Plan, The Mooney Suzuki, xbxrx, Discount (Alison Mosshart before The Kills), NEA 7 legend Frank Moore, Mook (Paul Dano), Val Emmich, LandSpeedRecord!, ASG, Zero 1 (Hal Sparks), Tris McCall, The Milwaukees, punk rock pioneer Ernie Brooks, The Majestic Twelve, and many, many more.
That being said, the bands are just the beginning - we also celebrate zines, small press publishers, indie comix, visual arts, films, and sometimes even microbrewed beers when we have the chance. Not to mention that we always give away trainloads of free culture swag from all over the world, so bring a backpack. Woo hoo!
