There are nine pop-song-length tracks here, but none of them will get near the top 30; but it doesn’t make them any less entertaining. The whole question of being in a band and making records is itself pondered in “Alone In Music”, which roughly jangles along on a sea of questions, whilst instead of a guitar solo, Jonah executes a rather good impression of a disturbed cat. There’s plenty of time for gutsy loops, interspersed with static and a gritty grind, as “Rock And Roll Canal Boat” once again proves that The Forest are still very much a credible force. Jonah often mines his favourite influences, which are often found in the dark, early days of the Mancunian post punk scene. “You’re A Fascist” is the starkest and perhaps simplest outing; “We can live in a cave and raise a family of incestuous cannibals …..but not if you’re a fascist “ – it's truncated genius at its best. The rhythmic, musically rhyming “Piss All Over Everything” is a superb theme of loosely rattling, slow motion guitars. There’s no hint whatsoever that the ideas are running out at the Forest farm." MMMM ½ LION OUT REVIEW - MANCHESTERMUSIC.CO.UK By JA "After the implosion of the original The Forest line-up Jonah Stevenson disappeared for a while and whilst his presence was missed no-one really expected to him to then emerge with March’s “Hidden Fortress”, a brittle, broken bag of lo-fi treats. With the debut album and now the follow up available via iTunes, “Lion Out” takes up almost where the former left. A bedroom opus of drum machine fuelled loops and twangy guitars, fed by dour narratives, Jonah Stevenson dabbles with the poetic school of Mark E whilst driving splinters of post rock guitar in-between the joints. “You Don’t Listen” in the true Forest way drives the point home incessantly before the wirey acrobatics of “You Can Hold Me Now” buzz overhead like angry bees. The entangled guitar parts of “Take Notes” drag you under the surface of Jonah’s observations but it’s the Knightrider-ish sequencing of “Arrows Flying In” that is the simplest yet most impressive moment. A big, thick slice of electronica, over which the vocals create an almost religious / blasphemous wail. The jumbled “My Heart Won’t Let Me Forget You” is the sound of inner turmoil set to the sound of a dozen Buzzcocks songs, cut apart and pasted back in random order. This is a quick follow up and two albums in one year is a difficult enough feat. The debut still has the edge but “Lion Out” is another marker on the ascent of the bedroom nihilist." MMMM ½ LION OUT REVIEW - SMASH HITS PRODUCTIONS (Taiwanese website) By Pang "The sound of the Lion Out Album is a dark colour layer of obviously different than their previous Hidden Fortunes album, just for like under six minutes long song 'You Don’t Listen', which repeated in the strong and sustained beat and continuously murmured a sentence similar to Kraut-Rock’s magic flavor; also the song ‘Arrows Flying In’ is a little kind of Industrial music attempt; or my favorites ‘Take Notes’ and ‘The Lion's Mighty Roar’ are like Ron Johnson label would love to forward their usual eccentric rhythm then released it. This total 11 songs album is rich in purely independent spirit." HIDDEN FORTRESS REVIEW (abridged)- MANCHESTERMUSIC.CO.UK By JA “Hidden Fortress is the first album proper by Manchester luminaries The Forest, although essentially the outfit is now stripped down to founder and principal songwriter Jonah. Over the twelve tracks the sounds of DIY, jagged leftfield guitar noise and anthemic suburban songs shine out. There is a complete sense of dark humour, twisted anger, wry intelligence and the kind of angular ruggedness of outfits that set the Manchester scene into a post-punk overdrive. “It Won’t Leave Us Alone” is a fractured sonic stroke of genius... This is an amazing body of work – a collection at least as good as, and in my mind superior to a whole schedule of current releases. This is one of the most important home grown records of the year."
