Who I'd like to meet:
Soweto Kinch & The Garforth Jazz Rock Band – A match made in heaven?............................................................................................................................................................................................................. Bringing the sinuous muscularity of his jazz hip hop hybrid to the festival table, Soweto Kinch stretches his Mobo Award winning Mercury music prize nominated legs in the direction of Garforth. However, not content with previewing his long awaited third album, Soweto is cloaking himself in the educator’s garb. In doing so he picks up a gauntlet formerly held by the likes of Dennis Rollins and Courtney Pine for he will be writing an original piece of music for, and perform with, the Garforth Jazz Rock Band prior to his own festival appearance. Over the course of four sessions, Soweto will be travelling to Garforth, and working with the GJRB on creating an original musical piece. This in many ways reflects what the festival is all about for it brings the artists into the community in a creative endeavour. For anyone with a thirst for music what more could they ask for but a taste Mr Kinch’s new masterpiece, Basement Fables, and the world premier of an original piece of work performed by a 25 piece band. A right royal feast........................................................................................................................................................................Date: 28th June 2008 Venue: Garforth Community College, Main Hall, Lidgett Lane, Garforth, LS25 1LH Time: 7.30pm Tickets: £14 & £12 (conc)....................................................................................................................................... Jazz Jamaica Allstars, the Garforth Arts Festival and a playground................................................................................................................................ The musical titan known as the Jazz Jamaica Allstars rolls into town, all guns blazing, for the finale of the Garforth Arts Festival – the Playground Party. Delivering their innovative take on Trojan record classics this is a chance to relive Britain’s first experience of Jamaican culture. Take the opportunity to drink of the music that provided an emollient to the racial tensions of 60’s Britain......................................................................................................................................... Date: 5 Jul 2008 Venue: The Garforth Community College Playground, Lidgett Lane, Garforth Time: 1pm – 11pm (approx) Tickets: Single: £20 Local resident prices: Concession: £14 Single: £12 Family: £52 (2 adults 2 children) Concession: £8 Under 5's: Free Family: £34 & under 5s: free................................................................................................................................................... Tickets – info@garforthartsfestival.co.uk also available at Garforth Bookshop, 15 Main St. Garforth (0113 286 3534) & Jumbo Records, St. Johns Centre, Leeds Website – www.garforthartsfestival.co.uk Festival Office – 0113 336 8619...................................................................................................................................................... Friday 16 November @ 8.30pm - Tyson's Glee Club ().....................................................................................................................................One of jazz's young Turks rolls into town with his talented quartet. Not contented with his award winning time at Leeds College of Music Nick Tyson has just scooped the first All Party Parliamentary Jazz Appreciation Group's scholarship. Having played with guitar luminaries such as Jim Mullen this truly is a musician whose star is in the ascendent. So part the curtains & take a peek at tomorrows stars today. Can you dig it? (BDJ)......................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................Friday 21st December @ 8.30pm - The Samuel Thornton Quartet ().....................................................................................................................................Lord 'a mercy - Sam the man is coming to town and you are in for a treat. Because this boy can sing. Having cut his teeth as a vocalist & saxophonist with the likes of Clare Teal, Dennis Rollins & Gerard Presencer, involving nights that have seen him roll up to perform in venues from The Royal Albert Hall to the Millenium Dome - The boy Thornton has stretched his musical legs & begun to deliver his own repetoire. And it is some repetoire - one that sees his debut EP & album released this autumn - Drawing upon musical influences from 'Cannonball' Adderley, Tom Waites, Charles Mingus, Walt Disney, Ian Dury & Screamin' Jay Hawkins - Sam's bluesy jazz is a dark chocolate slice of the wrong side of the tracks. So if you're suffering from incontinence, depression, or hair loss this is the cure-all to make your festive season sing. Did I mention He could sing? He can. Not even death should stop you attending. (BDJ)......................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................Friday 18 January 2008 @ 8.30pm - The Olivia Moore Quartet(}..................................................................................................................................When I first listened to Olivia's quartet they were on the receiving end of a standing ovation from an undiluted Jazznic audience - and Big Daddy knew he had to book them. A classically trained violinist Olivia moved over to the dark side at 21 and drank deep of many musical cups - Jazz, Cuban & Indian - & has collaborated with world stage luminaries the ilk of Jean Toussaints & Mukesh Jadhav (Tabla). In creating the quartet Olivia has brought together some of the finest musicians in the country in the form of Stuart McCallum (Cinematic Orchestra) on guitar, John Thorne(Lamb) on Upright bass & Mickey Wilson on kit (if you haven't seen Mickey previously - enjoy). New Year never sounded so good (BDJ).......................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................Friday 15 February @ 8.30pm - The Simon Kaylor Quartet ()..............................................................................................................................................Having studied under the jazz titan Jerry Bergonzi – Kaylor brings his no frills attached, straight down the line jazz genius to Welcome Home Sexy for a post Valentine’s Day jazz love in. Having performed with artists as diverse as Bob Mintzer, Joanna McGregor, Roy Wood (ELO, Wizard, The Move) & Marissa Price (Prince & Chaka Khan) Kaylor ploughs a musical furrow at once ancient & modern. He is more than loved up by the talents of Jamil Sherrif on the ivories - who regulary performs with the likes of Zoltan Dekany & Pat McCarthy in his acclaimed octet; Russ Pearson on Upright Bass who finds time to perform with the likes of Soweto Kinch, Joanna McGregor, & the Grand Union Orchestra as well as producing commissions for the BBC & Ch4 & finally Dave Walsh on Kit -a man equally at home playing jazz, latin, drum 'n' bass or rock & who has bashed his pig skins with the likes of John Surman, Stan Sulzman, Jim Mullen amonst other. Lovely music, lovely guys, lovely groove. Lovely. (BDJ).........................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................Friday 21 March @ 8.30pm - The first anniversary Hurrah or 'What Doesn't Kill You Makes You Strong' with If Destroyed Still True().............................................................................................................................................Bringing together some of the most innovative, exceptional & contemporary musicians in the North, If Destroyed Still True are led by the percussive genius of Tommy Evans & featuring Parliamentary Jazz Award winner Nick Tyson on guitar, fire & brimstone honker Simon Kaylor on sax, Si Beddoe blowing out the cobwebs on Trumpet & the expressive fingers of Johnny Tomlinson on the ivories. Whilst drawing upon influences from Avishai Cohen to Perfect Houseplants IDST have developed a more orchestral style whilst retaining a focus on improvisation & musical communication. This has resulted in a coming together of jazz & folk in an idiosyncratically English fashion - sweeping melodies, unusual harmonic progression & complex rhythm keeping. Music to keep the listener on their toes without alienating. What better way to bring our first year to a close whilst opening the door on the second ().................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................Friday 18 April @ 8.30pm - TBC ()
