Influences
I am not sure how much "influence" would play into it, but I love Ella Fitzgerald, Sara Vaughan, Nina Simone, Etta James, as well as Marvin Gaye, Janis Joplin, Ray Charles, Tina Turner, Joni Mitchell, and Patsy Cline. I do like some artists who are still living but the ones that are gone are the ones which are most present for me at the moment.
Sounds Like
I don't know what we sound like or truly what genre we fit into. Maybe someone out there can help me with that.
I am a jazz/blues singer/songwriter originally from North Carolina now calling Los Angeles home. I have a history with classical music, but have found my passion in jazz. I write my own music which I perform with my guitarist and arranger Dino Durand. In more cabaret -style settings (like LA's Gardenia Room), we perform all of my original music which tends to be very intimate, somewhat humorous and ultimately inspirational. When we are performing in larger venues (like Catalina's in LA), we play more traditional jazz and blues with Dino Durand's south-american jazz band Way South. However, given the fact that all of my band is south-american, nothing ever comes out in a traditional format. We take standards and twist them into something completely different. For instance, we have an arrangement of Bill Withers' "Ain't No Sunshine" that is unbelieveable. Check us out at wendyworthington.com
