PAUL ELDER - GUITAR
Paul has matured like a fine cheese to become one of the finest fingerpicking axemen this side of Hurrans Garden Centre.A very clever, tasteful player with more Fenders than the Fender factory.Londoner Paul was once mistaken for an Australian and deported.Realising their mistake the Aussies sent him home thankfully.Paul enjoys a roll-up before, during and after a gig.*************************
BRIAN HUMPHREYS - VOCALS AND BASS
Blessed with a gravelly, gutsy vocal approach that hollers down that long state line from Louisiana to Georgia...right up across the levees and the George Street Bridge Bayou,Brian is the main songwriter in the band and is equally at home playing harmonica, guitar and mandolin as he is laying down the bottom with his Jazz bass
The Smokes are a Newport based outfit centered around Guitarist Paul Elder and Singer/Songwriter/Bass Player Brian Humphreys.Their sound is a melting pot of influences from across the pond as well as the UK.
A strong country flavour provides the backbone for The Smokes, with songs like "3am",The Steve Earle esque "Little Black Seeds" and the Sun inspired rockabilly of "All The Way From Milton" sitting comfortably alongside the cool jazz overtones of "For The Summer" the soulful "Will It Ever Get Better?" and the acoustic folkiness of "Holy Water"
Live, the band also feature guest percussionists, rather than a drummer to compliment the subtleties of their arrangements, adding to the laid back, late 60s vibe of The Smokes
