“Discover WestFire” New to the San Diego scene is local band Westfire. Formed only a year ago, they have already achieved much headwind in the music race. Booking shows at popular local venues such as Soma, Beauty Bar and even Casbah, Westfire proves that hard work and dedication does pay off. After finishing their much anticipated EP, “Who The Hell Is Westfire?” this past March, and independently releasing the five songs online through itunes and CD this coming May, the crew will begin to make plans for their first tour up the West Coast. Singer/songwriter/drummer Kevin Jacob is the heart and soul behind their driving force, writing songs like “Step In My Shoes,” where he opens up about his childhood and being adopted. Jacob has been playing drums since he was a child, but didn’t combine it with singing until just recently. His soothing voice and drum beats hit the right pitch every time. But don’t disregard the rest of the band. Guitarist/vocalist Garrett Robinson and bassist Chris Richardson have both been playing with Jacob since high school, bringing an undeniable chemistry to the table. Robinson utilizes the tremolo technique, which is a regular and repetitive variation in amplitude for the duration of a single note, drawing similarities to the new Kings Of Leon album. The funky bass line pumped out by Richardson anchors the harmonic framework by laying down the beat, keeping everyone on cue. Keyboardist Danielle Spears rocks out as the only female in the band, delivering a full serving of badass with each performance. Her jazzy chords add just the right amount of oomph, bringing them to a fuller sound. For Westfire it’s all about the entertainment. “Our main goal is to connect with the audience during our live show. I feel that is the true entity that will set us apart from other rising talent” says Jacob. And it certainly does! Jacob’s charisma and sarcastic sense of humor in addition to their fresh sound, keep dedicated fans coming back in flocks. Their feel-good alternative edge takes influence from Paul McCartney, The Band, Phil Collins and the Eagles. With catchy melodies and lyrics it won’t take long until your singing right along with them. The EP “Who The Hell Is Westfire?” reveals a story within each song. Entitled with a question mark, the EP aims to answer the question of what they’re all about. The song “Westfire” does just that with the lyrics, “we are the westfire/I know it’s a good thing/westfire/this could be a good thing.” “Stone man,” and “Tom song” are both about friends they knew back in high school and their crazy antics, while “Long Way Home,” uncovers issues with relationships. Although unsigned at the moment, Westfire is unlikely to stay that way for much longer. “We want a label that is genuine and treats us like family. That gotta have faith in the band and who we are as artists before we sign onto anything,” says Jacob. Each member has more than earned their right into this cohesive group and is definitely an act to keep on the radar.
