Mayor -

I appreciate your response. My question was rather general. I am interested in knowing if there is a procedure that is to be followed for closing of a street for a festival or block party etc. I live on the corner of Center and South. As you know Center is being closed today for the July 4th Street Fest. As I live on this corner and South is one way it makes it hard for us to park in our driveway without breaking the law. It would be nice if someone involved in this could talk to us ahead of time so that we could get some special consideration in accessing our drive way. I am just curious on whether or not there are procedures that should be followed.
Thanks!

Depending on your specific question, there be multiple ordinances that may
apply. I found the most general and most requested one which is Ordinance #99-005.
You can view it in PDF format by clicking

Does anyone know how to get a copy of an ordinance regarding closing of streets?

Hey - if anyone knows of any houses for rent in West Jeff, could you send me a message? I have a friend moving to the Columbus area from a small country town in Eastern Ohio and would like to move to WJ to have the same type of atmosphere.
Thanks!

I live on Inwood, down from the Fire Dept. My wife and I can just barely hear the Tornado sirens.

I still think something needs done about Fellows ave. The speed bumps are not doing anything, so why dont the police do anything.

I believe the street that runs by Ann & Tony's (Pearl) & connects to Rt 40, needs to be one way. I work at the hardware and we see too many people pull out into traffic and come very close to getting smacked, because they can't see whose coming. I'm not bashing the restaurant, I'm looking out for the safety of others.

Hey...I live by the Dead end on Parkdale Rd. there is field at the end of my road that has a huge water run off that flows down our street and clogs our sewer drains. My husband has to go out there and clean them out regularly. Has there ever been any effort to have the farmers re-direct their water so where else?? It is a real mess especially for the people who live closer than me. Please let me know what can be done.

Jun 4 2008 1:28 PM

I live in Westwood and cannot hear the siren inside my house unless I have a window open. During the summer with the AC on and a fan running I never hear it. My neighbor cannot hear it in her house either so we call each other if we hear it go off. I do realize how expensive they are and appreciate the effort to get another one. I for one would be thrilled if we could get one back at Norwood. I had no problems hearing it inside my house when it was there.

Thanks for the info. Alot of people don't read the Press and don't get involved but always have questions, so this way maybe they will read this and understand whats going on. Thanks so much for your time and staying on top of things.

The Village originally had two (2) tornado warning signals, one (1) at Norwood, and one (1) located at Village Hall. According to the Service Director, these sirens were installed in the early 1970’s. In the last few years, these sirens began to have some problems, and need replacement parts. They were worked on regularly to make sure they would always function when needed. The age of these sirens, made it nearly impossible to find the needed parts, and the ones that could be found were either used, or extremely expensive.

In early 2006, the siren at Norwood completely stopped working. The Village did not hesitate to replace this siren, and with a grant from the Madison County EMA, the Village was able to purchase two (2) new sirens bringing the total number of sirens to three (3). A study was done to find the best placement for these new sirens.

It was determined that the best place for these sirens was near the Jefferson Township Building, and by the Parsons Hardware Building where they exist today. With the old siren at Village Hall, the technology of the new sirens allowed the Village to overlap the audible sound produced by the sirens. This means that no matter where you are at in the Village, at least one siren can always be heard. Most areas have more than one siren that can be heard. The study also showed the best place for sirens that may be needed in the future due to development.

The siren at Norwood has not been operational since the beginning of 2006. It was suppose to be removed when the new school was built. With the height and size of the new Norwood school, it was determined by the siren company that these new sirens would not function at full capacity if replaced at Norwood. This is why new locations were found that would allow them to work at full capacity. Several articles were done about this in the Madison Press and Messenger. It received a good about of publicity. It was discussed in several Council meetings, which is reflected in the Council minutes. Also, it was advertised on the Village website for a period of about two months.

The Village will always put safety first under my administration. I am currently working with the Madison County EMA, and Battelle to secure funding for one, and maybe two new sirens. This would be a great asset to our already excellent warning system.

Just a thought, with all these storms we are having, and it's that time of year, I sure hope that the Tornado Sirens will soon be fixed at Norwood, and the Downtown location. I am sure there are location that can't here the ones that do work. It cost so much money to install them, it looks like it would be worth the time and money to keep them fixed.

Go to a council meeting. Make your concern known until something happens. Write a letter to the editor of the Madison Press to make your voice heard to villagers that don't go to Myspace.

There didn't used to be a stop sign at the corner of Garfield and Fellows. People used to fly around that corner all the time. My mom used to collect their hub caps and refuse to return them. Four times they popped the curb and slammed into the tree (that's no longer there at 155 Fellows.) Once in daylight hours.
She went to then mayor Charlie Miller who refused the sign. Then she tried council meetings. Then she tried the press. Then she gathered law enforcement (mostly state troopers) and confronted the council again and magically got what was so necessary. We still have the Madison Press articles. She did what she thought was best and got results because she kept trying new outlets.

Now, I think quite clearly that Mayor Hock has shown that he cares and has gone out of his way to do so. This is where you come in. Council doesn't read Myspace (as far as I know) and neither does the police chief.

SO GO TO A COUNCIL MEETING!

Take neighbors. Be CIVIL. Address your concerns without screaming and yelling. It won't generate the results you seek. My temper is easily lit and I know personally how well hot tempers DON'T work.

Prepare notes and take documentation. Video tape the speeders while kids play. It always helps to SHOW the problem. Hit them where they live. We're visual creatures. Also, avoid comments on the tape. Let the video do the talking.

I think you could get more results if you're more vocal.
The Mayor will welcome you. Hopefully, the council will see your concern as well.

Well we are trying to give the speed humps a chance, and for some its slowing people down, but for some they are just flying over them. I have just one question, where are the police and why dont they try to get the rest of these people to slow down. Help me understand why they dont do anything about this, but I do stand behind our Mayor for doing this, I just wish we can do a little more. This is a great start to a big problem. Thanks again for the humps.

The National Road Yard Sale will stretch across the entire state, but the best place for it is right here in West Jefferson. There are several locations along Route 40 selling items, and even a few you can take your stuff to and try and sell. For more info go to www. ohionationalroad. org

Speaking of the speed humps.

How does snow removal work with those?

May 24 2008 8:53 PM

I think the speed bumps are good. It is a high traffic area and with children around it is good to have those kinds of preventive methods to keep speed down. My son's development off of 161 in Columbus has them on their main drags also. Of course it will never stop the problem but anything that helps is a big plus.
Kudos to our Mayor! Remember you can't please all the people all of the time!

This is in response to on older posting.
I live on Plain City Georgesville Rd. I have personally met with ODOT regarding the installation of the traffic light. They will be using part of our yard for their equipment.
The actual construction will start in April of 2009. They are moving the entire road East to take the first dangerous curve out of the road and aline the intersection.
1 more year to go but it is much needed!

"you can't fix stupid"

If I did see it I'd call whoever told me a liar. But I just watched someone drive around the speed bumps. They managed to get the passenger wheel to stay on the road and only drive over the bump with the drivers side.

Lazy & stupid.

I support my Mayor for putting in the speed bumps along Fellows. My kids are babysat along Fellows, and everyday I had to watch cars speed up and down fellows for no other reason than just to go above the limit. And I also agree that a third speed bump is needed in between the two current speed bumps. Just my opinion.
Love it or hate it, that's why we're here!

i guess the w.j.
police should go by the circle k about 4pm - 6pm thru the week and start checking the handicap spot because there are lots of cars there that don't have a card, they just don't get it or just don,t care

I am so glad to see the speed bumps on Fellows. It was much needed and it is a great start to a big problem. However I sat on my front porch last night and watched a jeep full of kids try to jump them 3 times. They had to be going atleast 45 mph. I agree there might be a need for another one inbetween Twin st and Frey. I have notice the most problems around 2:30 when the High School lets out. My son was almost hit by a car getting off the bus. We called the police station and I have noticed police in the area more around that time of day.
Thanks again for the speed bumps it was a great idea!

May 5 2008 3:16 PM

I like the new speed bumps done on fellows, BUT their needs to be much improvement. I think they need to be just a tad bit higher because people are barely slowing down to go over them, some people are not slowing down at all. Also there needs to be a speed bump in between the two because the ones that slow down then speed up to get to the next one. There is too much distance between them. That's just my suggestion. The neighbors I've talked to agree with this. But thanks, it would be great if these improvements were made. You need to see these people flying over the bumps, it might just caus more problem's than just speeding. Otherwise we are very happy to see something starting to be done.

I am writing just to see if anyone else got really sick over the weekend. I bought 3 dinners from the High School Friday night, and I got food poisoning. I was really sick, which is really scary for me ,due to a recent Kidney Transplant ,I have to be ever so careful.Just thought I would pass this along, in case anyone else got suddenly ill, and bought the Chicken and Noodle dinner, thats probably what it was.
