Spanning two countries, four very individual, promising music careers, and a multitude of genres & instruments, The Sweetness met somewhere in between. Somehow, solo singer-songwriter soul mates Aly Tadros (Austin, TX), Chloe Charles (Toronto, ON), Douglas Jay Boyd (Austin, TX) and double bassist Sam McLellan (Toronto, ON) managed to find each other, & gathered for a late night of impromptu jamming at the 48th Annual Folk Alliance International Conference in Memphis, TN.
It began as a backing project for Aly & Chloe’s solo projects. Fast friends from the previous years’ Folk Alliance, the two had already toured Europe & the States together. A year later, trying to expand upon a good thing, plans were made to meet up in Memphis once again, this time with some favorite collaborators – Douglas, himself a gifted singer-songwriter in addition to his abilities as a percussionist - & Sam, an overactive freelancer & composer willing to do anything to escape the frozen North in February. A generously donated hotel room became a makeshift rehearsal space. Harmonies were added, parts extended & rearranged. After playing a number of breakthrough showcases at the conference, the foursome quickly gained buzz and excitement throughout the halls of the hotel.
The creature that is now known as The Sweetness was born in the most unlikely of places: the stairwell between the 17th & 19th floor of the Marriott Hotel in Memphis, TN. The rich four-part harmonies & heavy cajon-driven backbeats echoed & resonated & drew in the crowds of curious, & quickly excited, spectators. Regardless the improbability of two Austinites and two Torontonians meeting & entwining themselves musically to such a degree, this is what came to pass. A number of these late-night, guerrilla stairwell jams occurred during that week. After one particularly rousing number, a voice in the crowd shouted “Sweetness!” & something just clicked. A dream project was born.
After the closing of the conference, Chloe and Aly invited Doug & Sam to join them on their European tour – and raised $1,500 within the first two days of announcing their plans to start a fan-funded tour effort. This March The Sweetness will record their debut EP and premiere at a number of SXSW Showcases. This will be followed by a string of European dates and festivals – including the UK, Germany, France, Italy, and the Netherlands.
While each band member is an active fixture within the music communities of their respective cities, each individual has also devoted a great deal of time to touring – taking part in a number of US, Canadian, and European tours. This will be their most ambitious project yet, with a goal of raising $5,000 for their first fan-funded album and European tour.
