Born October 2, 1972 in Cleveland,Ohio, Greg Erba eventually setttled in Woodland, CA, an agricultural town near Sacramento, and began his musical training with classical piano lessons at the age of five.
"My mother and father took me and my twin brother [film composer, Tom Erba] in dad's den, showed us a picture book of instruments, & said 'pick one!'" he recalls with a smile. After a few years of the Suzuki method on piano, he switched to the saxaphone, and briefly flirted with the drums, but at age 15, fell in love with the electric guitar.
"I saw Eddie Van Halen in a live concert on television, and that was it for me; I knew what my instrument was. Later that year, Mom took me to a Santana Concert at the Greek Theater in Berkeley, and at that moment I knew I wanted to be a musician. I was somewhat introverted in high school, but had a few dear friends, one of which was the guitar. I hooked up lessons with Bill Schoeler, a great blues guitarist in Davis, CA, and played guitar in the Davis High School Jazz Band, under noted director & teacher Fred Lange... and then later studied jazz with Henry Robinett, a prominent jazz guitarist in Sacramento..."
Upon graduating high school, Greg moved to the San Fernando Valley to study jazz performance at Cal St. Northridge.
"Unfortunately, I found myself creatively stifled in music school, and was learning more by just getting out and hitting jam sessions and playing in cover bands at parties..." he recalls.
After dropping out of music school, Greg moved to Pasadena, where he "got married, had my son, got divorced, and then got to growin' up!" he says with a laugh. "I worked odd jobs and stayed involved with various projects wherever I could... pick up jazz gigs and a jam session here and there..." he remembers... "but when I began to pursue my own original music projects, that's when I really began to develop a sound of my own on the guitar."
Around that time Greg met and was mentored by Kevin Eubanks, house guitarist for The Tonight Show Band at NBC.
"Kevin was a major influence on my approach to guitar. He had an intuitive, organic way of sharing information, and most of what I took from him technically was through a process of osmosis... just watching & listening to him play" he shares... "I did tech work for Kevin from time to time at NBC, and got to know some great musicians there... guys like Ralph Moore, Robert Hurst, Vicky Randle, and Marvin "Smitty" Smith, who I ended up starting a trio with"
After a two year hiatus from the jazz scene, where he devoted much of his time to the brutal combat sport of Muay Thai Kickboxing ("My opponent broke my nose the first punch of my first fight... don't worry, he paid dearly for it"), Greg made a sudden venture into roots country music, bringing his lead guitar skills to any honky tonk that would listen in Sothern California. Upon meeting drummer Perry Senn, he started his current project, the roots rock 'n roll trio, The Fulltones.... "I always talked about this project with Veikko (former bass player for Royal Crown Revue) before we both left RCR..." Greg explains... "It was just a matter of finding the right drummer, which finally happened in a little honky tonk in Chatsworth, of all places!"
Greg Erba has brought his guitar playing to such diverse artists as Latin rockers Azteca, Jazz renegade Arthur Blythe, Metal legends Leatherwolf, Retro swingers Royal Crown Revue, Country artist Brant Vogel, Southern rockers The Barbed Wire Boys, Pop artists Strange Radio & Petra Westen, Youtube phenomena Ukelele Bartt, and his own eclectic projects including the east meets west trio Majesty, studio rock band Ascension, fusion band We Three, & his current project, The Fulltones
