We Were Pirates is Mike Boggs. Armed with an electric guitar, a casio keyboard, a sparse drum kit, and a laptop, he crafts annoyingly catchy yet simple pop songs. Subject matter ranges from really fun parties and the cruelty of love to self-imposed isolation and geographical dissatisfaction.
We Were Pirates recently released a five-song ep entitled, "The Wolf." The entire ep was written, performed, recorded, and produced by Boggs in his bedroom on his trusty iBook G4.
Chicago Public Radio show, "This American Life," recently featured We Were Pirates' music on their podcast. As a result, Chicago Tribune Rock Critic and co-host of "Sound Opinions," Greg Kott reviewed We Were Pirates' music, describing it thusly: "Pure pop. This should be the next Fountains of Wayne single...genius."
Press:
"Nervous," the third track from The Wolf, draws the listener in while Boggs emotes in a hushed tone through an entrancingly melodic, electronic soundscape. The song conveys an honesty that makes it feel epic, despite its soft simplicity.

"Pure pop. This should be the next Fountains of Wayne single…. genius. Gets me every time."
- Greg Kott, co-host of Sound Opinions and rock critic for Chicago Tribune
"Both "The Wolf" and "Nervous" are sparkling songs with clever, playful lyrics...We look forward to hearing more from this boy genius and hope We Were Pirates will play in New York City. We'd love to see him live."

“I warmed up to it fairly quickly. These songs may be relatively subdued, but they all have their fair share of melodies and some of them still manage to be pretty catchy”

"it's damned good—made more so when you consider that he recorded this stuff himself on his iBook. I can't wait to hear more of this stuff—it's great."
