PLEASE VISIT: epicthemovement.org [click here] E.P.I.C. (Everyday People Initiating Change) began as a non-profit organization, but has now become what we believe to be one of the most important movements of our time.
The birth of E.P.I.C. was a result of the two of us (Alexi Panos and Tennille De Freitas) sharing the same vision; feeling a strong calling to initiate change in the way that people live today. After pursuing lives that were very much driven by what was going on in the "New York Scene", so to speak, we came together with the realization that by doing just a little, we could greatly change the lives of the people in the world who need it the most.
In July of 2006, we traveled to Tanzania, Africa to find out what it was really like to live in one of the world's most impoverished countries by staying with a family in a small village, where running water and electricity were hard to come by. While we were there, by talking to and living amongst the people in the village, we found out that the biggest necessity in Tanzania was the thing that the majority of us completely take for granted. The basic need of CLEAN WATER!
After raising enough money (with the help of some of you!) we were able to install our first water well in a small village in Tanzania, Africa! In August of this year, we went back to give hygiene and sanitation talks to the two schools surrounding the well, and met with the UN and US AID, before finding the next location in need of clean water. This time, we personally experienced what it was like to walk for 4 miles (there and back) to collect water from the only source in the village (a dirty river), and carry it back in a 10 liter bucket on our heads!! It was one of the hardest things that either of us have ever done, but it reminded us JUST HOW NECESSARY it is to provide these people with the one thing crucial for their survival - CLEAN WATER!!!
WATER AFFECTS EVERYTHING! Without water, we wouldn't be able to do anything else. Access to clean water prevents contraction of diseases such as cholera, typhoid, diarrhea, parasites, malaria, and even HIV and AIDs, since young girls are usually the ones who have to go collect the water, putting them at risk of rape. Clean water also affects agriculture and farming, as access to it means that crops are able to grow better, providing families with more food. Access to clean water affects education, because if children no longer have to walk for miles, 3 to 4 times a day (often before or during school), then they will be able to attend more classes, and perform better in them. Since water contributes to the overall health of the community, access to clean water can supply a stronger, healthier and more capable work force, affecting the overall economy of the country.
By focusing our efforts on the children of Africa, we hope to eventually contribute to putting an end to the immense imbalance that exists between the developed and developing worlds.
We hope to be able to show you how easy it is to make a difference, no matter how insignificant you may feel in the big scheme of things. Nothing you do is too small. Even by viewing this profile you are making a difference, because if you add us as a "friend", you are making the information available to everyone else who views your profile. E.P.I.C. was started by two individuals who had no prior experience in anything of this nature. All they want is to help in whatever way they can, and you can do the same. It is THAT simple. I can not ever thank you enough for all that you do. I admire your work of grace and determination for doing more for others. I truly cherish your talents and gifts and hope one day i can follow something similar but for those that i closely relate to personally to reach out to them and let them understand they have a brother in me because your like sisters to me b/c of what i seen in your efforts and extreme acts of kindness.
