After five years of marriage, it appears that Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes are getting a divorce. The couple hasn’t been seen together in public since February, and it’s been noted that she did not attend any of the Rock of Ages movie premieres.

The couple was married back in November 2006 in Italy. They have one daughter together, Suri, who is now six years old. TMZ has reported that the couple does have a prenup in place. The couple’s net worth is estimated at around $275 million today.

Katie Homes’ attorney, Jonathan Wolfe, released a statement regarding the breakup:

“This is a personal and private matter for Katie and her family. Katie’s primary concern remains, as it has always been, her daughter’s best interest.”

It is unknown at this time whether or not now known that Katie Holmes has filed divorce papers with the court, and is seeking sole legal custody of the couple’s daughter. The filing took place in New York on June 28th and cited “irreconcilable differences” as the cause for divorce.

Apparently the filing caught Tom Cruise by surprise, as TMZ reports he is “very sad” and “did not see this coming.” A representative for Cruise issued the following statement:

“Kate has filed for divorce and Tom is deeply saddened and is concentrating on his three children. Please allow them their privacy to work this out.”

Why's everyone so sad about it? Like it actually affects anyone here personally... Really?? I'm surprised they remained married so long. Probably had more to do with Suri; trying to keep a happy pretense for her sake, until now, when she's gotten old enough to realize that her daddy is a control freak who wouldn't even let Kate make any more films, even those she was already into, like the second Batman movie. Katie is most likely just trying to get her daughter out from under Tom's thumb before its too late, and he starts brainwashing the poor kid with his inane Scientology beliefs. At least she'll have an opportunity to live her own life with her mother. Living with Tom Cruise HAS to be impossible! I mean, the guy's been famous and in the public eye for so long, he probably thinks he really is a Movie God, or some kinda god; he's been told how wonderful he is since he was a teenager, so I wouldn't be surprised if he has an ego the size of Texas. Could you imagine living with that as your husband, let alone your DAD? Lol. And then too, he's so rich, and has been for so long, I wonder when the last time was that anyone told him NO? I'm sure he can do no wrong... And is probably completely oblivious to his wife's needs and feelings. I mean, according to this article, he "didn't see this coming". Really?? Maybe its just because he wasn't looking. I'm sure he's thinking, "How dare this little nobody actress divorce the great Tom Cruise??!" Lol, ok, I'll stop bashing Tom now. I really don't hate him or anything. I just think he's been acting so long that he forgot how to be real-- all his characters seem like the same character for the last few years. And I'm sure he doesn't stop acting when he gets home, either. But still, maybe he really is saddened by Kate leaving him. I mean, divorce hurts everyone, no matter who we are.

I am sad for the reason she filed fpr divorce, whithout giving Tom a chance to sit down and talk about it before coming down with such a conclusion. I understand Katie does not follow Tom's religious beliefs, but I feel it didn't have to come down to this.
