On The Rise: Matthew Koma
By Emily Zemler • Jul 27, 2012 at 4:08 PM
.Up-and-coming musician Matthew Koma has so far been best known for his appearances on the songs of other artists, but Koma has begun to release his own music, securing him a spotlight of his own. Koma, who recently got done touring with LMFAO and Eva Simons, now has his debut album Propaganda, on Cherrytree/Interscope, a follow-up to his recent Parachute EP.
.Koma has appeared on numerous tracks, including Far East Movement’s “Ain’t Coming Down” and Zedd’s “Spectrum.” He’s also collaborated with Swedish House Mafia’s Sebastian Ingrosso, Alesso and Ryan Tedder on his track “Calling (Lose My Mind).”
.
.Koma, who hails from Long Island, signed with Cherrytree/Interscope last year. One of his first number was a collaboration with Jukebox, “Novocaine Lips,” which appeared in the film Abduction. The first dose of Koma’s own music came on his EP Parachute, which was released in May. Koma told ARTISTdirect.com of the disc, “There absolutely was a vision. Musically, I was trying incorporate my background from playing in a lot of rock bands and listening to Elvis Costello, Joe Jackson, and bands that had rad, jangling guitars. That’s one side of music I really love, and then there’s the beat-driven side of things. I really love dirty beats and stuff that sounds lo-fi in a cool, retro way. I’m trying to incorporate that in a lot of the production of the record. Lyrically, I feel like a lot of the songs are stories dealing with faith be it struggling with faith, discovering it, or questioning it. It felt like they were told through different characters and stories on the record. Those first songs are part of that.”
.
.Propaganda, the album that followed this summer, showcases even more of the artist’s tracks. But that’s not the only thing the musician and songwriter has been responsible for lately. Koma has co-written a track for Carly Rae Jepsen’s upcoming debut. And the singer sounds like she is a big fan. Jepsen recently tweeted, “Dear @MatthewKoma thanks for blowing my mind with your music. Wow. I have a new, not so secret obsession.” That seems like as good of an endorsement as any.
