In this week’s movie news we’ve seen several projects get the green light, others in the “wishful thinking” stage, an announcement about next year’s Oscar host, and lesbians. Or at least a movie about lesbians, but more about that later.

Star Trek fans anticipated something great on Conan O’Brien’s late-night show when J.J. Abrams was set to debut the first clip from the upcoming movie Star Trek Into The Darkness. But the joke was on them … the clip was only 3 frames long, literally less than a second.

Are you a fan of classic novels adapted for the sci-fi genre? Well, if you are, today is your lucky day! It turns out that Lynne Ramsay is set to direct Mobius, which is apparently an adaptation of Herman Melville’s Moby Dick in space. She’s also writing this project with her husband, Rory Kinnear (We Need To Talk About You Kevin). First thought: yea or nay?

We know that Bill Condon has added a post-credit scene to Twilight: Breaking Dawn – Part 2. Now, Nikki Reed has revealed what she thinks will be used for that scene: a dance sequence choreographed to Sweet Dreams by the Eurythmics, as a surprise one day for Condon. Well, whatever it turns out to be, we’re sure it will be something fans will enjoy.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides director Rob Marshall has picked up the reins on Disney’s Into The Woods musical fairy tale. On the casting side it looks like the film will feature Anna Kendrick, Patrick Wilson, and Allison Janney along with Oscar-winning actress Meryl Streep for the lead role.

On the stranger side of Hollywood, Gwyneth Paltrow apparently wants to make a musical about the Go-Gos, and Belinda Carlisle, who was the lead vocalist for the band, has been contacted about writing new songs for the film. We’ll just have to wait and see if she’s still got the beat.

Another oddity that has popped up on the radar this week is a three movie deal between Hasbro and production company production company Emmett/Furla that will include a Hungry Hungry Hippos based movie. The other two movies in the deal are based on Monopoly and Action Man, a British superhero. What will they think of next? No, don’t answer that.

What do you get when you take the hottest trend in movies and apply it to home releases of classic films? The Wizard of Oz in 3D is what you get. The new 3D version of the film will be coming to DVD and Blu-ray in 2013, as part of a collection of films getting released in honor of Warner Bros.’ 90th anniversary. Of course, you’ll need a 3D TV in order to appreciate this deal.

Did you hear the story about the Chinese tycoon who offered a $65 million dowry to the man that could convert his lesbian daughter, who eloped with her lover, into a heterosexual marriage? Sacha Baron Cohen heard about it and has made it the inspiration for his next project, tentatively called The Lesbian.

Finally, in the best news of the week, Seth MacFarlane has been picked to be the host of the 2013 Oscars. This has been a year of firsts for MacFarlane, who made his first appearance as host on the season premiere of SNL and also made his first foray onto the big screen with the Ted. As you can see in the video below, he’s pretty excited about the opportunity. Personally, I think he’s a great pick. What do you think?
