In news that should surprise no one ‘The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel’ did not win this weekend’s box office race. I know! Bummer, right? I think it was just a bad weekend to release it, honestly. Frowny face emoticon, you guys. Instead the first place film was a record breaker as ‘The Avengers’ opened to the tune of $200.3 million dollars, good enough for the BIGGEST OPENING OF ANY MOVIE EVER MADE IN THE HISTORY OF TIME. Think about how long movies have been coming out. Thinking? Got it? Now think about being the biggest movie of all time. Prestige Times, y’all!
Joss Whedon’s ‘The Avengers’ (which is what we’ll refer to at is henceforth) unseated the former biggest opening ever ‘Harry Potter’s Last Movie’ which debuted with $169.2 million. So, Joss Whedon’s ‘The Avengers’ made $31 million dollars more than the previous champion! It helped that film was great. A few months back I walked out of ‘Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol’ and said it was the single best action movie I had ever seen and I stand by that. It was and is. It’s awesome. Well, I walked out of my midnight screening of Joss Whedon’s ‘The Avengers’ and called it the best superhero movie I’ve ever seen. Some have scoffed and said “better than ‘Dark Knight?’” To which I answer, “yes.” I like those Nolan ‘Batman’ movies, but they are soooooooooo dark. There’s almost no laughs in those. I like my superhero movies funny and Joss Whedon’s ‘The Avengers’ was most certainly that.
What, however, does the success of Joss Whedon’s ‘The Avengers’ say about us? I could say it suggests we’re predictable, but that would be snide, especially when the movie was so good. Instead, I’ll say it suggests we’re smart. Yes. Smart. Because we all made the decision to support Joss Whedon who probably could have fallen on his face here, but instead he made a film that was so fun, so immediate and so Whedon (without being “too Whedon”) that he’s presumably positioned himself to be able to do anything for as long as he shall live. Viva La Whedon!
There were some other movies, they made very little money in comparison.
