Lionsgate has released the first trailer for Dredd, the action-packed sci-fi adaptation of the classic comic book character from John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra. The movie stars Karl Urban as Judge Dredd, a cop from The Hall of Justice who may act as a judge, jury, and executioner. This trailer explains a little more about the plot, but also contains a lot of fast-paced action.

There’s an interesting bit where the judges talk about the drug “Slo-Mo,” and we find out that it makes the brain feel like time is passing by at 1% its normal speed. It seems like that might be an exaggeration, but it brings to mind scenes from The Matrix. As the entire city comes under the spell of this drug, the addiction spreads.

And that’s where Dredd comes in … to rescue the city and clean house. Of course, he’s not alone. Joining him is Cassandra Anderson (Olivia Thirlby), who does her fair share of ass-kicking, especially after the prostitute turned drug lord Ma-Ma (Lena Headey, “Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles”) puts out the snuff order on them. It looks like she’s a tough one too, and I expect she’ll get plenty of action as well.

Official Synopsis: The future America is an irradiated waste land. During a routine day on the job, Dredd is assigned to train and evaluate Cassandra Anderson (Olivia Thirlby), a rookie with powerful psychic abilities thanks to a genetic mutation. A heinous crime calls them to a neighborhood where fellow Judges rarely dare to venture- a 200 story vertical slum controlled by prostitute turned drug lord Ma-Ma (Lena Headey) and her ruthless clan. When they capture one of the clan’s inner circle, Ma-Ma overtakes the compound’s control center and wages a dirty, vicious war against the Judges that proves she will stop at nothing to protect her empire. With the body count climbing and no way out, Dredd and Anderson must confront the odds and engage in the relentless battle for their survival.
