Nine people were injured when a man went on a stabbing spree at Swedish House Mafia’s show in Dublin over the weekend. The show, which took place on Saturday night at Phoenix Park and also featured Calvin Harris and Tinie Tempah, resulted in the 23-year-old man’s arrest.

According to NME, the man stabbed four crowd members, seriously injuring three and putting one in critical condition. The other five injuries were the result of “a fracas involving broken bottles and knives.” The man who was arrested has been charged with four of the stabbing and the police are continuing the investigate the other incidents. 30 people were also arrested and bailed after being charged with assault, drugs and public order offenses. In an unrelated tragedy, a 20-year-old man died at the same show of a suspected drug overdose.

Denis Desmond, MD of concert promoters MCD, who put on the show, said, “Ticket holders entering the site were subject to a search permissible by law. Every precaution, as far as possible, was taken to ensure the safety and security of the audience at all times. Despite our best efforts – with security and gardaí personnel levels well in excess of the required numbers for a licensed event of this size – there is only so much one can do to combat anti-social behaviour.”

This incident raises a lot of concerns about safety at EDM concerts, particularly after a similar stabbing took place in Coachella’s Sahara Tent during Flux Pavilion a few months ago. We want to know: What are fans bringing stabbing instruments to concerts anyway? Aren’t shows supposed to be about having fun and forgetting your worries for a few minutes? Do you think this is an issue that is specific to dance music? Tell us in the comments.
