For over 15 years, Monica has been a mainstay on the R&B scene: from her breakout 1995 single “Don’t Take It Personal (Just One of Dem Days)” to her 2010 smash “Everything to Me,” the woman born Monica Denise Brown has let her voice do the talking. This past April, Monica released her seventh studio album, New Life, which includes the Missy Elliot-produced single “Anything (To Find You).” To mark the occasion, Myspace recently sat down with Monica to talk about her career in an exclusive video interview that you can watch below.

Over the course of our extensive chat with Monica, the singer opened up about her career, her  influences and her passions. She revealed that she didn’t start singing until age eight because, coming from a family of talented singers, she didn’t fully appreciate her own talents. She also recalled an early music experience –seeing Michael Jackson’s “Bad Tour” — that stays with her to this day. “It was the most amazing concert I have ever seen to date,” she says. “That concert stuck with me throughout my entire career.”

Throughout the interview, Monica was candid about her early material, describing it as “just a teenage girl going through the changes and picking things as I went along,” and she says the honesty in her music has allowed her to stay connected with the people that have supported her throughout her career. She even reveals that she is a fan of country music — particularly artists such as Faith Hill and Tim McGraw.

But above all, Monica says music has changed her life for the better. “Music to me is a universal language,” she says. “It is the mender of broken hearts. It’s a consoler of long nights. Music is that one thing that to me just bridges the gap.”
