  • Recap: Sum 41 quench Hollywood's punk-rock thirst

Around 5 p.m. on Friday, steps away from the Hollywood Wax Museum, a line started to form, its members roasting in the hot L.A sun. Those gathered weren’t patiently waiting for some cheesy 3-D flick or another overpriced tourist trap — the crowd bunched in front of Boardner’s was in the mood for some iconic pop-punk. Sum 41, who headlined Friday’s Myspace Secret Show, have certainly played in the L.A. area over the years — after all, frontman Deryck Whibley now calls SoCal home. But the excitement among those waiting to catch a free performance from the Canadian punk stalwarts was undeniable, especially in anticipation of hearing the four dudes rip through new tunes from their just-released album, Screaming Bloody Murder: Sum’s first full-length since 2007, and the LP that ends the longest gap between albums since their breakout smash, 2001’s All Killer No Filler.

    .

It seemed at one point that the tiny venue’s walls simply couldn’t contain all those eager to rage, but like clockwork, at 7:30 p.m., the masses piled in to catch the opening performance by LA crew Kemble Walters & The Blank Faces. As Walters — best known as the drummer for The Rise — and his band plowed through their short, powerful set, Tim Armstrong — of Rancid and The Transplants fame — chatted backstage with the Sums as they stretched their punk-rock limbs. As the chants of “Sum 41″ began, and the audience started to tweet and snap photos — shooting them around their social network with their new smartphone apps, Color and Textplus, and all sorts of other modern-age gizmos that Sum 41 could have only imagined back when they were just scraggly high schoolers who played loud music — the band burst onstage. Deryck Whibley smiled as he greeted the crowd, before leading his band through a rowdy one-hour set. At times during the set, which included classics like “Fat Lip” and newcomers such as the title track from their new LP, the screams were so loud you swore you were at a venue triple the size of the intimate Boardner’s. And, being the showmen they are, the band excitedly answered the crowd’s deafening cries for Slayer with a bone-crushing heavy metal medley near the end of the set. After the show, once the band had barreled offstage, the crowd, sweaty, exhausted and thoroughly rocked out, snatched their limited-edition poster, and piled out onto Hollywood Blvd.
