The Blues as Rhythm ‘n’ Blues was vital in the formation of the holy music. But at its source R&B is just the Blues. A highly influential form of music, added to and the basis of many forms of music,is the Blues. One cat by the name o’ Huddie Leadbelly recorded an early Rock ‘n’ Roll recording called ‘Black Betty’ in 1935, for crying out loud! Not mid-fifties Rock ‘n’ Roll but Rock ‘n’ Roll none the less…..
What makes a song Rock ‘n’ Roll, you ask? A shouted and not proper vocal style, untrained. Slurring and mumbling and unfinished words…..and in Rockabilly music, hiccupped vocals. Various shouts and yells and anything you want because Rock ‘n’ Roll is everything that human emotion entails….Some times but not always a stand up ‘Dawg-House bass, slapped or plucked. A distorted, loud and deformed guitar style which is based in The Blues. A sax style that could ‘honk’ and wail or play tenderly but not right. The drums should keep time and rhythm in a precise and heavy, Back Beat’ way. Sock rhythm or shuffle rhythm or whatever but loud, basic and precise. Because Rock ‘n’ Roll is everything that human emotion entails….
The first actual ‘1950s’ style Rock ‘n’ Roll recording….Rocket 88. By Jackie Brenston and his Delta Cats….or….Ike Turner and the Kings of Rhythm…....whoever....
Race-Music or ‘The Dirty Blues’ or by the early 50s Rhythm ‘n’ Blues are a vital ingredient in the formation of Rock ‘n’ Roll. The Rockin’ additive that makes music Rock and Roll. Iffin you add R&B to straight Country-Music you get Rockabilly so R&B has made the Country-Music Rock ‘n’ Roll.

1949 and hot wax by Sticks McGee set jukeboxes on fire! With an early Rock ‘n’ Roll recording called ‘Drinkin’ Wine Spo-Dee-O-Dee….
In 1952 Western-Swing outfit Bill Haley and the Saddlemen started to perform and add more R&B to their shows? And they begat ‘Hep’ clothing with Bill Haley himself sporting a ‘Spit-Curl? But truth be that Bill Haley and the Saddlemen had recorded Rock ‘n’ Roll since 1951 with a cover of Jackie Brenston and the Delta Cats, ‘Rocket 88’! Bill Haley and his Comets took hold of this Rock ‘n’ Roll music firmly and more Rock ‘n’ Roll quickly followed come 1953 with; Rock The Joint and Crazy Man Crazy
The Vocal Groups were a beautiful and glorious part of Rock ‘n’ Roll. Their sound and song makes you cry and weep or throw your massive head back and laugh like a natural fool. All the first 50s vocal groups where influenced by groups like ‘The Mills Bros’ or more importantly by the Bluesier sound of ‘The Ink Spots’. Respect to; The Red Caps, The Orioles, The Five Keys, The Cues, The Spaniels, The Dominos, The Del-Vikings, The Platters, The Robins, The Clovers, The Cadillac’s and so many more….

Back in the 1920s gals such as Bessie Smith and Ma Rainy started a tradition in ‘Shoutin’ The Blues’ that carried on through Mabel Scott in the 1940s and on into Big Mama Thornton as the 50s commenced. Then on into Etta James, Lavern Baker and Ruth Brown right through the 50s….
Who I'd like to meet:
So….you think you know me? Why I wear cool clothes and dig cool music…in your head…. you think you know me! You know nothin’ brother…you know nothin’ bout passion and feeling and emotion…. You know nothin’ bout me….dig?
The Delmore Bros.......
Stars of the ‘Grande Ole Opry’ in the 1930s and having an amazing effect on the history of Country-music….The Delmore Bros should be respected. Dig; Freight Train Boogie, Boogie Woogie Baby, Mobile Boogie, Pan American Boogie, Field Hand Boogie, Muddy Water, Hillbilly Boogie, Weary Day, San Mountain Blues, Kentucky Mountains and more. Not mid-fifties Rock ‘n’ Roll but hillbilly based 1930s Rock ‘n’ Roll non the less….
Rock ‘n’ Roll owns your very soul….it eases pain and gives such happiness…..Rock ‘n’ Roll leads you through life but demands absolute loyalty and deep deep and relentless love….
White artists also played a massive part in bringing forth the birth of this holy music. Just after the Second-World-War white folks invented the first corcation form of actual Rock ‘n’ Roll known as Country-Boogie. Or a degrading but earthier phrase would be Hillbilly-Boogie. Hillbilly-Boogie music was almost always based upon a Boogie-Woogie feel which means a repeating of musical phrase overshadowed say by a ‘Shuffle Rhythm’ and more rhythm supplied by a double bass, guitar and maybe a ‘Lap Steel’. Other instruments could polish and enhance this music; a fiddle, mandolin, banjo, dobro and harmonica. And a lazy and laid back ‘Cow-Boy’ time and motion added to this music and see here….we got…..Hillbilly-Boogie!
After Country-Boogie….Rockabilly music took the stage as we head into the mid-fifties. Rockabilly being a superb mix of straight Country-Music given a shot of Rhythm ‘n’ Blues. Maybe a 3 piece outfit….heavy on rhythm ….a dawg house bass…a take off guitar…rhythm guitar with the singer hiccupping and yelling his vocals while spitting and sweatin’. A music full of passion and power and drive
