About me: Hi, I'm Roy Wild & I run free wheelchair skills training for a children's charity - Go Kids Go (Association of Wheelchair Children).
Our patron is Ade Adeptian MBE (Ade did the Wheelchair dance sequence on the BBC and has also featured in numerous TV programmes including Beyond Boundaries, Holiday and Desperados. Ade was also an ambassador for London's 2012 Olympic bid and played wheelchair basketball in the England team). Ade was one of the first young wheelchair users to get training with us and he is now a great role model for a lot of the kids that attend today.
On the courses we teach skills such as back wheel balancing (so that you can go up and down kerbs independently) and we also play games like wheelchair basketball. We even look at how to go down a flight of stairs in a wheelchair! We bring extra chairs so mums, dads and siblings can get involved and join in the games. It's all about inclusion, I'm not a wheelchair user myself, though I do join in with all the activities.
We have also started running wheelchair/disability awareness workshops in schools. We have 2 therapy teams, one based in Beverley, East Yorkshire and one based in East London and between us we run courses throughout the UK.
The courses are really fun & we get to meet lots of great people.
