Wheeler Street is the location of the Greyhound pub in Maidstone. The pub holds regular singaround nights that the band go to as many times as possible and was also the place where they did their very first gig.
Wheeler Street (the Band)manage to combine all the excitement and enthusiasm of youth with terrific musicianship, great vocals and imaginative arrangements of both original and traditional songs and tunes.
The 7 members are all still in their teens and came together to form the band in March 2007. They had all played music from an early age and had all been in various bands with Toby over the years. In fact the recording of Pete and Toby singing and playing Let It Be in Toby's dining room at the age of 9 still exists.
Although all the members of the band now live in the Maidstone area they bring to the sound influences from all around the UK and further afield. Ben comes from Newcastle and is of Irish parentage, Toby and Jon both have Scottish as well as English blood and Sophy was born in Australia and is also half Scottish. The band works so well because each and every member is fiercely passionate about the music they play and are commited to playing and singing with integrity and with utter respect to the tradition, but they also LOVE a good time and they are one of the most entertaining and fun bands that are currently on the folk scene.
The description of "folk rock" is not really accurate but it avoids the use of the word fusion which is possibly worse. There are elements of rock music but also you can hear influences of funk, jazz, pop, reggae and all types of dance music but all firmly rooted in the folk tradition. Wheeler Street are young and highly original and inventive, if you think you don't like folk music this is the band that's going to change your mind.
