"Reading WHEN THE DRUMMERS WERE WOMEN gave me goosebumps. This inspiring history of feminine power and spirituality shows that patriarchy is just a blip on the screen and that women in charge of our bodies and spirits is our natural state. Layne Redmond has restored the drum to its rightful place as a sacred technology for repossessing our own consciousness."

“When the Drummers Were Women adds a valuable new dimension to our understanding of the ancient Goddess religions. Redmond, herself a brilliant drummer, documents that these instruments have long been played by women in ritual. Her own experience as a musician gives her insight into the ways drumming can be used to affect consciousness and opens our imagination to envision the actual ceremonies of the Goddess. As a drummer and priestess myself, I loved this book!”

We begin by... REVEALING
the Mysteries through research, playing the framedrum, practicing yoga, meditation, chi kung, and other spiritual pathways, which takes us into the internal process of REMEMBERING.
As our inner awareness begins to pull together we work at RECLAIMING
these ancient modes of beeing and knowing.
Then the work of RESTORATION
begins, bringing forth a deep blessing of reverence, to REVERE
, followed by the inner joy and celebration, to REJOICE!
This brings us to the portal of the inner door and the interior mysteries which will lead us through the labyrinth and into the REBIRTH
of our ancient future.
When the Drummers Were Women: A Spiritual History of Rhythm
by Layne Redmond
Hello All,
FYI, this site will be managed by another who has studied with and has been greatly inspired by Layne.
I created this space, for both drummers and non drummers to meet here, who have been inspired by this book. And wanted to let others know of its existence, who may take an interest in reading it.
I often wonder how many more women are drumming now since, Layne began to teach and author this book. Layne has been an inspiration to many around the world. To see all the images of women playing the frame drum made me
feel like it was an ancient memory of mine of something very familiar that made me feel at home. It called to me.
My life since has changed, as now the frame drum is a very important part of my joy and life.
All the best, Miranda
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The frame drum is one of the oldest sacred instruments in the world.
It is hoop-shaped where the drum head is wider than the depth of its shell.
In the ancient cultures of the Mediterranean and Middle East,
the predominant players were women. They used the drum for
religious functions, rites of passage and communal bonding.
Layne traces the drum back to the goddess traditions of these ancient cultures and shares many images from temples, wall paintings, vases and reliefs depicting women playing the frame drum.
30 years ago in the U.S, it would have been a rarity, to find a hand played frame drum in the hands of a women. These days, frame drums are found in many households, being played by many women. One frame drummer at a time, thanks to Layne Redmond
Layne Remond has been a pioneer in inspiring women to play the frame
drum from across the U.S.A and internationally with offerings of workshops, classes, intensives, retreats, performances and presentations since 1981.
She integrates other healing modalities, ritual and history within her workshops.
In June 1997, she authored the book "When the Drummers Were Women" which traces a spiritual history of the frame drum in the ancient cultures of the Mediterranean and Middle East to the Goddess Traditions of those areas. This exposed many to the ancient instrument the frame drum.
She has numerous CD recordings, music projects, and instructional videos as well as her own line of signature series drums by
Now more women are playing professionally.
Others are playing for personal nourishment, pleasure,
healing and empowerment.
Others are playing within communities that raise consciousness,
create sacred space and support a more sustainable way of living.
Miranda.. Thank you for your time sweet sister! I just got my first frame drum today!!! So excited!!! I traded a flute I had to get it. It was either the frame drum or money to pay my bills ...
