In the innocent pre-college years of his life, Joshua Pederson chose to branch off from his band and start something new, and the result was Where Astronauts Go To Hide. Although it started as a Plain-Jane coffeehouse acoustic routine, it started to blossom into a noteworthy act that began to gain recognition in his hometown of Minneapolis, as he started to collaborate with other musicians.
In the summer of 2007, Pederson moved to Chicago in hopes to break into a bigger city and learn some business tricks. It was here that he attempted to form a label/collective called By Land or By Sea with friends Tamara McCoy and Kenny Reuben, and released the first full-length record, "The Tragic Wreck of the Hexxus." He also met the current member of the band, Rachel Kahn, marking the beginning of a genre transformation: from a dark, experimental sound to a more traditional folk style.
Where Astronauts Go To Hide began touring the nation, playing both coasts and Canada during 2008. He has now formed a full band, including members from both Minneapolis and Chicago. Throughout its history, the band has had the luxury of sharing the stage with Murder By Death, Akron/Family, Lowry and the Show is the Rainbow.
"Amongst Friends," the bands latest effort, is being released on April 14th, 2009. They will tour extensively in the summer and fall.
What people are saying:
"Pederson’s got early dibs on song title of the year; is there a Minnesota song out there with a cheekier name than 'Great Lakes, Greater Lays?' "
"(Shows) plenty of promise with Pederson capable of both breezy Andrew Bird styled ditties – replete with catchy whistling motif – and winsomely strummed songs with a bit of Jonathan Richman in their DNA."
-Metromix Twin Cities
"This is honestly one of the best (live) sets I have seen this year. I really look forward to seeing what else Pederson has in his guts."
-EmptysTapes.com
"Definitely quirky and dreamy, sometimes reminiscent of The Decemberists."
"Amongst Friends is a reminder that we are not alone in our struggles."
-TRACER Magazine
"... Evergreen and inspiring. I want to dance. I want to drink. I want to kiss. I want to cry. I want to burn a picture of the president."
"Pederson is an intelligent lyricist who understands love and loss, and knows how to craft a song that explains matters of the heart without borrowing cliches."

"Where Astronauts Go To Hide has shown itself to be a musical tour de force."
Oh wow! I moved it around the other day and thought something looked weird. Accident! Let's call it a glitch in the matrix. Everything should be back to normal now! I can't wait for the 10th, either. Can't wait to hang with/record/feed you guys.
