REVIEWS:
Listen for the Gulls provides carefully upbeat, occasionally fuzzed-out synth-rock romps with both male and female leads and touch of experimentation. It could be the halfway point between a more tense Pretty Girls Make Graves and Slingshot Dakota's bouncy goodness, but there's a lot of generally original shades here. Opener "Title Bout" has some excited, fuzzy yelps and clean female delivery, though she seems to take the reigns more as the songs progress. Weird archival interludes and overlaying keyboards make for some interesting layers and the melodies are fairly tight too.

Clearly the result of musicians with a long list of accolades, this is very accomplished and precise. Though it's quite easy on the ears, even bordering pure pop sweetness at points, behind the scenes there is a lot going on. If you like nice keyboard melodies in your indie rock/post-hardcore this will be worth seeking out.

The band plays synthy indie rock with an anthemic punk bite. The male/female vocals instantly remind one of The Anniversary but there are also odes to bands like Minus The Bear and Rainer Maria. But the band I can not keep out of my head when listening to Where The Land Meets The Sea is Pretty Girls Make Graves.

Influences
Jawbox, Braid, Minus the Bear, Samiam, and other such assorted wankery.
Boasting former and current members of The Cold Beat, Lock And Key, The Campaign For Real Time and Every Forty Seconds, Where The Land Meets The Sea bring a truly new sound to a typically cut-and-dried genre. The Boston band’s debut EP, Listen For The Gulls, is five song’s worth of synthesizer-powered, electronic-tinged indie rock that often dares to sail into post-hardcore influenced waters without ever forgetting its pop roots.
With a bright, summery feel tempered by cooling waves of atmospheric flourishes, the quartet packs a sugary punch that still possesses a razor’s edge and a knack for dramatic buildups. Where The Land Meets The Sea’s sound is a new breed of unapologetic rock infused by spacey synths, kinetic guitar riffs, a pulsing rhythm section and an absolutely infectious dual vocal attack. While similar outfits seem to have one vocalist fighting with the other for dominance, there is none of that here – all of the pieces fit exactly where they should.
Listen For The Gulls doesn’t pretend it’s something it’s not, which is to say that the EP touches on memorable elements from several genres without ever sounding like any one in particular. For most bands, there is always the risk of drifting into the abyss – for Where The Land Meets The Sea? Not a chance. They’ll continue to plot their own unique course through turbulent, unchartered indie rock seas.
