W.i.t.Ch. is a product of the Vienna folk music scene and of the Irish and French folk sessions in Vienna.
Late in 1996, Klara and Nicole started looking for people interested in putting together a women-only band. W.i.t.Ch. played in public for the first time in autumn 1997 in the original line-up of Klara (fiddle), Birgit (guitar), Marie-Therese (flute) and Nicole (percussion, bagpipe).
While W.i.t.Ch. started off with mainly Irish, Scottish and English folk music, the repertoire was gradually rounded off with tunes and songs from various European countries between Scandinavia and Greece. The first CD “Cuvée” was successfully launched on June 8th, 2001.
Marie-Therese left the band and from 2002 until 2006 Karin Siegler joined the band on flute. In 2004 W.i.t.Ch. recorded their new CD ‘Warte, Mädchen’ which is also the first official release of Heurekord.
In 2006 W.i.t.Ch started working on a new programm with newly added bass player Andrea Fränzel. Later that year whistle-player / harpist Karin Renner joined W.i.t.Ch.
After these rather turbulent changes and additions W.i.t.Ch. now concentrates on creating a new, more powerful sound with Andrea’s bass, more “folky” with Karin’s whistles and harp and Birgit’s accordeon.
Some places W.i.t.Ch. has played at:
„aufhohrchen“ (St. Valentin), Springtime Folkfestival (Taverne Michelstetten), Vienna’s numerous live-music venues (such as Tunnel, Paddy’s Irish Pub, Celeste, Zugabe, the Interkulttheater, Café Concerto, Kulturgasthaus Vorstadt etc.),
at Fiddler’s Green (Alland), Salzstadl (Krems), Musikfest Waidhofen/Thaya.
In Salzburg, Lower Austria, Upper Austria, Styria, Carinthia, Tyrol;

After you've finished here, you may like to hear this poem, & some songs, on myspace... Poem 187 of 230, WalkaboutsVerse (see my blog for details): A SOUTH SHIELDS WALKABOUT - AUTUMN 2001
Out of the museum-and-gallery (Wiser on Cookson and the local way), Down Ocean Road with, to the right of me, Its eateries and, left, neat places to stay; Before, on either side, Marine Parks - The southern-one a most beautiful place, Teeming with moorhens, swans, grebes and mallards In a small lake at a scenic-hill’s base.
Then (holding chips from the parade’s cafe And, thus, a flock of gulls squawking above) Onto the South Pier I made my way: Seeing seaweed over rocks - like a glove - And high-and-dry sands held from transgression By growth of grass and the weaving of wood, Plus, in the dim light of a sleepy sun, Fishing boats returning to Tynemouth’s hood.
