Sounds Like
"Sounds kinda like a happier Johnny Cash, writes kinda like sadder Weird
Al." - Craig Lyndall, inveterate Cleveland blogger
Alex Battles is a songwriter. His compositions range from country weepers to folk ballads and rock stompers. He sings and plays the songs with his band The Whiskey Rebellion. The Whiskey Rebellion contains six members, including Battles, dedicated to making a roof-shaking joyful hodgepodge of honky-tonk, jump blues, and rock 'n' roll.
Time Out NY has describted Alex's music as "a sly, catchy mix of old-fashioned country songs".The Village Voice has said of his performances: "Clad in a trucker's hat, brandishing a legal pad of just-finished lyrics, and sporting a drawling, lazy voice, Battles can wrap audiences around his knotty fingers."
Originally from Chesterland, OH, Battles has lived in New York City since 1995. He began writing songs when his twin interests of playing his grandfather's tenor banjo and writing poetry on second-hand manual typewriters merged into one. His songs are by turns funny and bittersweet, influenced by the likes of John Prine, Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Irving Berlin, Tom T. Hall, and many others. He pays tribute to his favorite songwriters on his songwriting website: Bob Dylan's Coffee Table.
