PLEASE, PLEASE, CAN YOU HELP MY BEST FRIEND TO LIVE LONGER IN ANY WAY YOU CAN?
More Info can be found in her BLOGS, also Please make a DONATION if you can.
JUST CLICK THE BANNER BELOW. THANK YOU... JO XXX
PLEASE HELP!!!
Some of you may be unaware that firstly DJ Lucy*Fur (Mel) has been my best friend and the nearest thing I have in any way shape or form to family for almost 10 years. Without Mel there would be NO WGW. Since 1999 I have gone through many tough times. When I desperately needed help, it was Mel that travelled hundreds of miles to sit at my bedside in the middle of the night to be with me and nursed me back to health. For years Mel has been the only person that kept me sane enough to carry on running WGW.
Over the past 7 years she has become an integral part of the festival, initially running and organising Creamy at the Metropole on a Thursday, as well as booking all the DJs for WGW, and more recently taking on a the complete running of Metropole events, plus the odd shift of Duty Manager the Spa.
It is safe to say I cannot contemplate WGW without her. Should I lose her, the whole event is in jeopardy. She is the glue that holds the whole thing together. She is THE most amazing person I have ever had the honour of knowing. For the sake of our sanity, we have now agreed that there will be lots of time for tears at a later date, and for now we have to try and be positive and strong and hope that SOMEONE SOMEWHERE in this world can save her as we had so many plans for life, for example; a joint 40th birthday party.
Mel's cancer is incredibly rare. Her highly experienced consultant has never seen a similar case of it in her 20 years of practice, so we are actively researching proactive treatments in other countries as only last week it was widely reported that the UK has the lowest cancer survival rate of any country in Western Europe.
I am fortunate in having a forum such as this to be able to help one of the people I hold dearest in the whole wide world, so If you have ever had even one minute of pleasure at WGW I urge you to donate even just £1 as this remarkable person has been partially responsible for your happiness.
We also hope to organise some fundraising events including collection boxes, gigs and sponsored events which I hope with all my heart you will participate in, or support.
Treatment in other countries will cost MANY THOUSANDS. She and her Husband would also like to be at home with her feline family for as long as physically possible, (which ultimately may result in Stuart resigning from his full time job) and for her family not to have any stress regarding financial matters.
Mel also has an unfulfilled dream to visit Tiger Island in Bangkok and I would greatly love to see her achieve this.
Shortly there will be a donation on the Main site, but for now please donate through her page if you can:

Alternatively donations can be made payable
to M.DENYER and sent to: -

It's said that if you play the A side of Spiceworld whilst watching a 3rd generation copy of Wake with the sound turned down, the true meaning of Goth is revealed!!
I do have a strange affinity with Dorothy, though Im sure she was never known as Oz Dorothy the way Im known as Whitby Jo. But, like her I started out in the middle of a black and white small town mentality and my curiosity sent me tumbling into a weird and colourful world where things were never the same again.
Back then, I was the only Goth in the small northern mining town where I lived. Hell, even the freaks thought I was a freak! I placed an ad in NME asking for pen friends and got over 150 replies. I started to correspond with around 40 of them. Some months later I decided Id like to meet some of them.
I decided to try and get everyone in the one place over the course of a weekend. Its fair to say that I chose Whitby based on its Dracula connections, but only because a couple of Dracula societies had run events in the town and I was hoping the hoteliers wouldnt be too freaked!!
I booked the Elsinore over the telephone after Len (the landlord) assured me that they regularly hosted live music nights. I dont think either of us was sure what wed let ourselves in for when over 200 people turned up that first weekend
And here we are ten years later. Its so nice that although the event has grown, The Elsinore is still very much part of the Whitby experience for without it and the support of Len, WGW wouldnt exist. So next time youre in there, buy the guy a drink. Hes a star!
Its been a roller coaster ride for me over the past ten years, highpoints include meeting some of my teenage idols and watching you lot giving it loads on the dance floor or just feeling able to be yourselves. At times its caused amazing pressure and anxiety, but all in all Im left with an incredible sense of achievement. After all, I did get to meet my pen friends didnt I?!
The thing that makes me most proud about WGW is how its helped to dispel a lot of the old Goth rules which include, you arent allowed to laugh, you must own a Sisters album, and you must wear black. Most importantly Gother than Thou seems to be a thing of the past.
WGW will be alive and kicking for as long as you all want to come and when the cloakroom gets over crowded with Zimmer frames, Ill open the Whitby Floodland Retirement Home and Top Mum can promote the Bingo every Tuesday night!!
WGW is bigger than any single person. Its an experience, a runaway train, my very own Oz and a spiritual home and as Dorothy said
Theres no place like home
