White Fire Reed-2009 is Gary Johnston-Lead Vocals and Guitar Mike Johnston-Lead Guitar and Keyboards
Rock, Classic Rock, Alternative, Ambient, Progressive Rock, Experimental....is infused with the sounds of "WHITE FIRE REED." Formed in 1997 with the line up of Gary Johnston-Vocals/Guitar, Mike Johnston-Lead Guitar, Steve Podolchuk-Bass, and, Chuck Chaboyer-Drums/Percussion. They began jam sessions in the basement without having a band name and exchanging creative idea's through music and lyrics. Playing "Covers" of other musicial influences inspired them to dig deeper within their roots to form creativity and lyricism with their creative talents.
The idea of the band name had struck Mike-Lead guitarist during a coffee session at one of the local coffee shops in Northwestern Ont region and the band "White Fire Reed" was born. Local Festivals and "Open Mic" sessions around Northwestern, ON were some of the Performances that this band had participated in.
White Fire Reed received their "Big Break" when Gary had made a connection in Southwestern, ON to perform at the Toronto SkyDome in 1998. The Band had submitted a cassette tape to the Canadian Aboriginal Festival in Brantford, ON...where the committee made a decision in having the band perform for the first time.
November 1998, White Fire Reed was selected to perform at the Canadian Aboriginal Festival at the Toronto SkyDome and was chosen out of 16 groups that were to perform for the "last time slot" that year. Many groups that were not chosen that year had already had been either Signed to a Label or were Independent....but, White Fire Reed was the only group that had a rough demo cassette submitted with their portfolio.
In 1999, Chuck-Drummer/Percussion and Steve Podolchuk-Bassist, decided to part ways with the remaining members-Gary and Mike Johnston. The duo remained to continue on with their musical tastes and were replaced with various, talented session players. Aboriginal.Peoples.Television.Network-APTN is the National First Nations Network that gave "White Fire Reed" the opportunity to be on their show called "First Music and Arts Show" with Waneek Horn and Victor Linklater-Producer. As a DUO.......The segment of White Fire Reed was first aired in April 2001 with Gary and Mike giving an in depth interview and live performance shots of CANAB Festival that year.
Presently in May-2009, Mike and Gary Recorded the NEW TRACK called "MAKE IT RIGHT" with both of them taking credits of both writing and composing the new song. White Fire Reed has performed at various "open mic" sessions around the Sarnia Area. Many local Bars have ranged from "The Two Amigos" and "Ups and Downs" and "Norm's Bar and Grill.."
