Why are so many people bashing Obama when Bush got us into this mess in the first place. I think Obama is doing a good job considering what he has to work with.
to understand the health care mess we have to understand where it came from and where it is going... Our health care system came from the churches and charity workers ( nuns etc.) who tended to the sick as a vocation not as a business... then came along business men who took over the caring for the sick and turned it to a mega billion dollar business.. hence the problem... Non profit hospitals have to continually expand and improve to not show profits.. ( the hospitals in my town have been building non stop for 25 years.) and to get rid of excess funds that are not swallowed up by their high paid execs. Add to that the Pharm industry and insurance industry who not only get outrageous prices for their products and services but expect us to believe that they must have those high prices. ( 35 per cent above the rate of inflation) The doctors and medical professionals are by no means the worst paid professions and some are greedy and abuse the system. Add to that the nature of health care.. ( ie.. you can go to the store to buy a cheaper paper towel but your health care is monoplized by the current system.. no competition..you have to go to the doctor.. hospital etc.. no choice if you want to live..) see my point? somethings gotta change... soon...
I agree with you, Thirst For The End, we need to build ourselves up before we help anyone else. As for speaking up, I think it's partly our problem; we elect these people into office and don't keep tabs on them...well, most of us don't. Democracy doesn't end on election day. I write letters and call my local congressmen all the time. They'll listen, if not for moral reasons, they'll listen because they want to stay in office. We complain, but we don't act. As for spending money, I think we spend too much money abroad. We spend money to democratize countries that may or may not want to be democratized...either way..it's not our problem. We employ the FBI and CIA to fight terrorism; they fight it every single day..that's what they do. Who do you think put all of those alleged terrorists in Gitmo? We were attacked on our soil and we're not used to that, but it happens all the time in other countries. We autmomatically felt that we needed to go to war to fight terror...were the wars worth it? I don't know. I definitely know the war in Iraq was and is a waste of money; we are democratizing their country...is that really what we need to be spending our money on? We need to spend money within our own country to improve our schools, technology, medicine, etc.. We are supposed to lead the world, but we seem to be spending a lot of time falling behind other countries. I support health care reform. I'm not crazy about passing it without the public option as the President plans on doing, but it's a start. It's not socialism and those who call it socialism obviously have no clue what socialism is....they just know it's this scary thing and that it causes Glenn Beck to cry. We are the last established DEMOCRACY without a universal health care system. We're not even getting a universal system or an OPTION...we are getting reform to limit the amount of control insurance companies have over us. We all seem to have no problem with insurance companies raping us. I have asthma and I pay for my insurance out of my pocket; I signed up for one price and my first bill reflected a new number...they raised my rate $150 per month because of my asthma, the reason I need health insurance. I don't want government to overstep their boundaries, but I want them to place some restrictions on companies, so that they keep up good business practices. The government should protect the citizen and consumer. Government doesn't have to be the problem, it should work with us to protect us. Whenever in doubt, look back to the constitution.
The only racists who voted in the last election where those who voted for Obama because of the color of his skin. They couldn't have voted because of his voting record as a senator, he worked to hard to keep from having one, voting 150 times as present on any contravercial topic.
