Bio
Perhaps the greatest band ever is White Pope.....On a single night (February 7, 1989), White Pope wrote and recorded 7 sacred songs in a divine act of creative bliss. Exactly 20 years later (check the myspace date) , these holy scriptures of songs would be given to all of God's Children. .. Geoff and Dean met in summer school 1987 and quickly became best friends. They both shared a kindred affection of music and late night christian television. In the shack behind Dean's parents house, they would stay up all night listening to music and watching TBN & The Morton Downey Jr Show. In 1988 they wrote and recorded 4 songs, both playing acoustic guitars and both exchanging lead vocals. The lyrics were randomly selected from a Women's poetry book that Dean had found outside a party. The Songs included "Psychotherapist Friend", "My Grandmother's Breast", "Lynx", and "Bones". Around this time the duo were also becoming heavily influenced by J.R, Bob Dobbs & the Church of the Subgenius. ..On February 7, 1989 the duo got together in the shack with no plans. A Casio Keyboard had been left in the shack by mutual friend Tony. Dean had just bought a Small Stone Guitar Phasor from a flea market, as well as realizing he could record through tiny mics on his cheap 80's Cassette player. The Duo had a revelation, They could record new songs with Geoff on the Casio and Dean playing his Les Paul through the Phasor Pedal. They quickly wrote "White Pope" and recorded it after a few takes. The end result was sublime, "Why not keep going", they thought.....and this they did. They wrote and recorded for well over 8 hours until 7 songs had been completed. The Moon had been settled in Pisces, a favorable time for music endeavors, especially from 2 young Pisces. The Songs included "White Pope", "Sly Bird", "Nocturnal Mission", "Sloke em' Dano", "Serenity", "Cardinal Fire", and "Distance". As proud as they were of their achievement, the cassette would rarely be played for anyone, and only Dean and Geoff had copies of the recording. Exactly 20 years later on Feb 7 2009, Dean would upload the tracks to myspace. .. Later in 1989 Dean had bought a 4 track reel to reel player. They decided to record again. From this session the song "My Elegant Girl" appeared, complete with Sinatra-styled lyrics, Jazzy Guitar, and a heavy metal guitar solo. It would be their last great moment. White Pope would try for the next few years to make something new happen, but it wasnt meant to be. They Later joined forces in "The Green Owls" and even revived "Lynx" and "Psychotherapist Friend" to use in their live performance. .. The Legacy of White Pope has now come to the masses. Some have described their sound as "Porno Music" or even "New Age", but its more than that. Oh yay my brother it is more than that. White Pope is as sacred as scripture, and he who does not believe in the Pope, shall have eternal bad taste. Amen -
