WhoMadeWho may lack a question mark after their name but their music will certainly have you asking after them. Why do they dress up in skeleton suits when they play live? Why does a band supposedly known for disco punk start their second album with an outbreak of omnious sounding woodwind? And why do they fill their most breezy pop moments with teutonic synths? The Danish trio are difficult to pin down but their music sounds as effortless as it is stylistically and sonically adventurous. WhoMadeWho are on a mission to eschew convention.
The band formed in 2003, with falsetto voiced bassist Tomas Hoffding coming from the Scandinavian Rock underground, singer songwriter/guitarist Jeppe Kjellberg from the avant garde jazz scene (with beard to match), and drummer Tomas Barford – who also records as Tomboy – a rising star of electronic music. They released several 12-inches on leading German disco label Gomma Records including ‘Out The Door’ and ‘Space To Rent’, culminating in their eponymous debut album in 2005, which won them a devoted audience who evangelised about their new favourite band, making it the sleeper hit of the year.
As a live band WhoMadeWho are an unforgettable, incendiary experience having played alongside genre bending contemporaries Daft Punk, Soulwax, Hot Chip, Justice and LCD Soundsystem. After touring together Hot Chip asked to remix new single ‘TV Friend’, and Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age has covered ‘Space to Rent’ after seeing them rattling bones in their skeleton garb. Their crowning moment of the last tour was being pushed up the bill to headline the main stage at Benicassim 2007 when Klaxons failed to show. The collective lightbulb that shone above 40,000 people as they decided this was A Good Idea led to a riotous reception and they instantly converted the unsuspecting audience.
While touring the globe the band started work on their second album The Plot. Always using a foundation of beats and basslines the songs are then written on top, alongside the unusual additions of oboe, castanets, electro synth or vocal harmonising that pushes their music into the extraordinary. In Australia they holed up in a flat to finish some of the tracks and a chunk of the album was done in Tomboy’s bedroom studio.
Despite the various locales the album is more sophisticated than the first, rich with atmosphere and ideas without losing their undeniable pop nous. ‘TV Friend’ harnesses such diverse artists as Human League, ELO and Blur into a mutant pop mix adding a disco twist. ‘The Plot’ sounds like another track that might appeal to Josh Homme with its garage rock guitars, rumbling bass, and vocal stylings. ‘This Train’ has Led Zep pretensions with what Tomas calls “stupid monkey drumming” and some of the techno touches you would hear from his own Tomboy productions. ‘Ode To Joy’ sounds like The Beatles had they been around when synths were ubiquitous and there is a nod to McCartney’s ‘Temporary Secretary’ lyrically and stylistically on ‘Office Clerk’. Elsewhere they show their spirit of invention on ‘I Lost My Voice’, a good song made great with some unexpected flamenco touches.
WhoMadeWho individually evangelise about 60’s psychedelia, 70’s stoner rock, 80’s mutant disco, 90’s electronica and this results in their mutant sound of now. They are so much more than a danceable rock band. They are the spark to a firework display of ideas. And they’ve just lit the blue touch paper for the second time. Don’t stand back!
