About me: ABOUT US:
Owner and founder of the Pretty Penny Sarah Dunbar is a avid collector and seasoned buyer of stylish fashions. She has been buying and selling vintage and contemporary clothing for 10 years. She started her career as a buyer at Mars Mercantile in Berkeley, CA. Mars provided her with buying experience during a time when vintage was at its peak. Most of the items Mars was buying at this time were vintage pieces ranging from the 1920's-1970's. Her second buying job lead her to New York City. Here she worked at a buy, sell and trade by the name of Beacons Closet located in the heart of Williamsburg, Brooklyn. There Sarah quickly learned how to buy "new york style". This buying experience encouraged her to be more creative and integrate an artistic approach to buying clothes from the public. Beacons Closet also allowed Sarah to learn about high end labels and vintage from Europe. Eventually Sarah moved back to the west coast where she had a hard time shaking the buy, sell and trade business.
Her obsession with vintage and fashion paired with buying and selling lead her to open up her small apartment once a month to serve breakfast pastry's and mimosas while selling vintage finds to friends. This event quickly gained popularity and the apartment business became to crowded.
She than moved her shop to a small location in Berkeley, CA and after only a year was given a wonderful opportunity to move to a larger shop in the Rockridge District of Oakland, CA.
The Pretty Penny is a bright and spacious shop that features a large and constantly-changing collection of vintage and contemporary clothing, shoes and accessories. The store also carries a variety of local "indie" art, jewelry and clothing. The store often hosts art openings, fashion shows and community based events.
"Our aim is for shoppers to feel at home and welcomed in the store. We pride ourselves on customer service and love to help in any way we can. In regards to buying clothing, jewelry and accessories from the public we train all staff to be up to standards on our buying techniques and style. We provide two large pink leather couches and encourage you to read from our fashion guides or just put your feet up and take a break. Our racks are impeccably organized in the hopes that this will make your shopping experience an easy one. And when trying on clothing, you are free to take your time, as if you are looking through a good friend's closet".
