The only way to have Freedom of Religion is to have a government free of religion.
Especially, if a government's religion teaches a Gospel of Hate and Ignorance!

I would like the find equilibrium in my life: The balance of the elements - Air, Fire, Water, and Earth. The balance of being - Mind, Body, and Spirit. The balance of forces - Smooth out the gradients between Light to Dark, Hot to Cold, Positive to Negative, and Good to Evil.
Not only do things need to be equalized but the true nature of things needs to be revealed, as well. Right now, there is far too much heat and far too much darkness. There is great evil masquerading as great good and, also, far too many people pretending that what is right and true is wrong and false (and visa versa). Their self-deception is so complete that they have lost the ability to reason. This traps us all in a collective nightmare and I fear that no one will be able to awaken from it in time.
I have a fair amount of background in biology and related sciences, too. I eat red meat, drink beer, and even watch NASCAR from time to time. I guess you could call me a hi-tech, red-neck.
I do photography (black-and-white and color) and graphic design in tradition and digital media. I also do painting and drawing in traditional and digital media, sculpture (I would kill for a rapid proto-typer - voxels rather than pixels), ceramics, and creating audio and video pieces.
In my previous lifetime (before being physically disabled), I was a strength coach and athletic trainer. I worked as a Fitness Specialist at a large metropolitan athletic club doing fitness evaluations, personal training, etc. Before that I worked as a trainer at a smaller fitness facility. I also had extensive experience as a lifeguard and pool operator and had a knack for keeping even the most temperamental aquatic facilities functioning smoothly. I used to teach swimming and diving as a Water Safety Instructor.
Oh well, you have to roll with the punches.

"No one has ever been burned at the stake in the name of Reason."
During
The Burning Times, at least 60,000 and upwards of 300,000 men, women, and children were burned at the stake in Europe. There were whole villages that were stripped of their female populations. At least one whole German town was declared to be guilty of witchcraft by its own magistrates. This does not include the victims on other continents or the victims executed by hanging, pressing, drowning, or other methods.
Good people will do good things, naturally, and bad people will do bad things, naturally. However, for good people to do bad things, that requires religion. Of course, for bad people to do good things, that requires reason.

Pagan / Occultist
Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the law. Spending your entire life searching various forms of philosophy and religion, you choose to observe everything and believe little. Your personality is one of truth seeking, nature respecting, and god/goddess accepting. Lastly, you do not judge anyone. However, if annoyed, then you will exact some form of revenge. You do not believe in the Three-Fold Law.
You Are A Celtic Pantheon Pagan
Your answers leaned very close to that of the Celtic Pantheon. Very popular now among pagans, the Celtic Gods seem to draw those who are sensitive and insightful as well as those who are very passionate about their beliefs. Many Pagan Holidays are named for this pantheon. Here is where you will find many stories of the Horned God, of the Green Man, and of the Druids. You most likely either have been to or very much want to visit Stonehenge one day. Many Arthurian legends include references to the Celtic faith, as well.

What kind of Pagan are you?
You Are Most Like Cernunnos
Cernunnos is the Stag of Seven Tines and the Winter Lord. The personification of Cernunnos is as a mature man, in his prime, with long curling dark hair, a full beard, and antlers. Usually naked and wearing nothing but a neck torque, he sits in a shamanistic, meditative position holding a spear and shield or another torque and a ram-horned serpent. A cauldron and/or a bag of gold are always near him, with a stag or dog by his side. Cernunnos is the one who is both hunter and hunted. The hound, the wild boar, and the stag are all sacred to him, as are paths that cross in the woods and all crossroads, in general.
Known to all Celtic areas in one form or another, he is "The Horned God", the God of Nature and Fertility, the God of the Underworld and of the Astral Plane, the Great Father, and many others. He is associated with good fortune and health in commerce, the hunt, and life in general. His original Celtic name is lost; Cernunnos is a Roman name meaning, "horned one". He might be associated with the early Celtic "Man in the Tree",
Derg Corra, which would explain his connection to the "Green Man". The Druids knew him as
Hu Gadarn, The Horned God of Fertility. The Norse knew him as
Freyr (Fro Ingwe) the God of Fertility and Success. He could have originated from an ancient god from the Indo-European common pantheon, which the Slavic peoples still embrace as "Weles" or "Volos". Cernunnos has become associated with all horned animals, animals in general, woodlands, Nature, life, virility, fertility, sex or physical love, wealth, commerce, reincarnation, and the underworld. In addition to warriors and hunters, he is also a patron of poets and bards. Much later, he became associated with "Herne the Hunter", who can be traced to an actual historical figure.

What Celtic Deity are you?
Weles
Weles (Veles or Volos) is a major Slavic God of Earth, Water, and the Underworld. He is associated with dragons, cattle, magic, musicians, wealth, and trickery. He can be traced to the common Indo-European pantheon. His descendants include St. Nicholas and, by extension, Santa Claus. One of his earliest representations was that of a serpentine creature (dragon or snake) with the horns of a bull, ram, or some other domesticated animal and a long beard.
The Ancient Slavs embraced the concept of the Tree of Life, which is the basis of so many belief systems. They, like so many others, believed their world to be a huge tree. Figuratively, the treetop and its branches represented the heavenly abode of Gods (ruled by Perun, the Slavic God of Thunder, represented by an eagle, sound familiar) and the world of mortals, respectively. The roots represented the underworld. Weles was represented early on as a huge serpent coiling around those roots and ruled the world of dead.
In this time long before Zoastrism (the origin of the modern and false model of a separate heaven and hell, stolen later by all the organized western religions), the Underworld was actually quite a loving and beautiful place. It was described as being a green and fertile land of grassy plains with abundant sweet water lakes, streams, and rivers everywhere welling up from eternal springs (as opposed to rain, the purview of Perun). The Underworld was home to all sorts of fantastic creatures as well as the dearly departed. The way to this glorious land-beyond was believed to be "across the sea" and where migrating birds would fly to every winter. This land, sometimes called "Virey" or "Iriy", was where Jarilo, the God of Fertility and Vegetation, would also go to and live during winter. Of course, he would always return from across the sea to bring spring back the world of the living (very similar to Legend of Persephone).
Jarilo was not the only one who would come back from the Underworld. As the God of Underworld and the Dead, Weles would regularly sent spirits of the dead into the world of the living as his heralds, as well. There were many festivals held in honor of Weles. All were held near the end of the year, in winter (sound familiar). Traditionally, this was the time when the powers of order grew weaker and the powers of chaos grew stronger. To the Slavs, this was when the veil between the world of the living and the world of the dead would grow thin and fade. This would permit the ancestral spirits to return to travel among their kindred.
The best known of these festivals was an ancient pagan celebration called Velja noc or "Great Night"; now known as Koleda, it is a combination of Carnival and Samhaine. This Slavic "Day of the Dead" was celebrated any time between Yule and the end of February. Young men, known as koledari or vucari, would dress in long coats of sheep's wool and wear grotesque masks, an example of Slavic shamanism. They would roam around the villages in groups and raise a lot of "Hell". Not unlike caroling, they would sing songs about how they have travelled a long way and how they are all wet and muddy. Obviously, they represented the ghosts of the dead who have come from the wet and pastoral Underworld of Weles. Every household they would stop at would welcome them warmly and presented them with gifts (a la Trick or Treat). The gifts offered to the koledari are believed to be passed onto Weles, as the God of Magic and Wealth. This may have given rise to the stories of dragons hoarding treasure, as well. In any event, these acts ensure good fortune and wealth for the house and family throughout the entire year.
As the God of Magic and Musicians, Weles' nature for mischief is evident the in the carnival customs of this Koledari shamans. In his role as a trickster god, he is in some ways similar to both Greek Hermes and Scandinavian Loki, and like them, he was connected with magic. The word "volhov", obviously derived from his name, still means sorcerer, in some Slavic languages. Since magic was and is closely linked to music in primitive societies, Veles was also believed to be protector of musicians. To this day, it is tradition for bridegrooms to make a toast and spill some wine on the ground, preferably over the roots of a nearby tree, before the music could start playing at wedding ceremonies.
As the God of Cattle and Wealth, Weles' main practical function was protecting the cattle of Slavic tribes. Often he was referred to as skotji bog, or "cattle-god". As mentioned before, among his attributes were horns of a bull or ram and sheep's wool. Being the God of Magic, Weles would be expressed in the presti vunu, or the weaving of wool and, particularly, crnu vunu presti, the weaving of black wool, as symbolic of the magical crafts and transformations. In some of surviving Koledo songs, Koledari sing they are coming along and "weaving black wool". Weles was also considered a protector of shepherds because of the wooly aspect and it reinforces his pastoral connotations. However, Weles does have some influence over agriculture in terms of the harvest and therefore wealth. The first ear of corn or sheaf of wheat or barley is still returned to the field in thanks to the Gods or made into an amulet to the harvest from evil or other misfortune. The latter was called, "tying of the beard of Weles", which also indicates Veles was imagined to be bearded. To gain good fortune and wealth, one must still be willing to grab a puna (a.k.a., brade or a "full fist of beard"). In particular, you are primiti boga za bradu or "to grab the god for or by his beard". This honors Weles, even if he is forgotten, as being the god good fortune and gaining of wealth.
After the prostylization of Christianity, mostly at the point of a sword throughout Europe and elsewhere, Weles was split into several different characters. As was customary with Christianity's policy to demonize any and all previous and true gods, he was transformed into the Devil. Of course, they could not do away with all of his aspects, so they just stole him and transformed him into multiple and sundry Christian saints – so much for monotheism.
It is remarkable that Veles managed to hold onto so many versatile attributes in ancient Slavic mythology. It took the destructiveness of Christianity to split him into many different characters. However, in other Indo-European mythologies, similar gods have also schematically divided, into several different deities. About four different characters showed similarities to Weles in Greek mythology: Pan (Nature, music, and cattle), Hermes (magic and trickery), Hades (death and underworld), and Typhon (serpentine enemy of the Greek Thunder God, Zeus, represented by an eagle – the equivalent of the treetop ruling, Slavic Thunder God, Perun, which is also represented by an eagle).
Only in Celtic mythology do we find a deity similar to Veles in his attributes and his complexity: Cernunnos, the Horned God of Celts who rules over, among other things, Nature, horned animals, wealth, health, the Underworld, Magic, and Shamanism. One of his symbols is a ram-headed serpent.
You Are A True Irish Laddie
You enjoy listening to good music, putting away good beer, and dancing like crazy - well maybe that is not so good.
You Are The Hazel Tree
There is an Irish myth of how the River Boyne came into being. There was a spring, sacred to Nechtan, a Water God whose name means "The Pure One", which no one was allowed to approach except for the pure or true of heart. (Note: Many "names" of deities, especially in Celtic myths and legends, are actually their titles and not their real names.) Nechtan, himself, and his three cupbearers (Flesc, Lam, and Luam) made up the spring's four guardians. The spring itself was a fountain of five streams, representing the five senses, and it was overhung by nine magical Hazel Trees. The number nine, which can be looked at as multiples of three (three times three, obviously), which is so prevalent in Celtic Mythology, is an important number in many cultures. In this case, the nine Hazel Trees represent the nine sources of Celtic inspiration not unlike the nine Greco-Roman Muses. This is a concept so ancient that it probably originated from the common Indo-European pantheon.
The purple nuts of the trees would fall into the waters of the spring. The nuts would, in turn, be shelled and eaten by the five Salmon of Knowledge, thus infusing them with great knowledge and wisdom. The leftover husks were allowed to go downstream, thus infusing the very waters with great knowledge and wisdom, as well. No one acquires knowledge and wisdom without drinking from at least one of the five streams (using at least one of the five senses) for inspiration. Apparently, this requires a dosage of at least three drops (threes again) of the waters.
This dosage is also expressed in the Welsh myth of Ceridwen's cauldron and her birth of Taliesin. (Note: It is spelled "Ceridwen". In Welsh suffixes, "wyn" is masculine and cannot give birth; whereas, "wen" in feminine and can give birth.) Gwion (Taliesin before his rebirth through Ceridwen) was charged with tending Ceridwen’s Cauldron of Inspiration while she collected ingredients for a potion of knowledge and wisdom. It was originally intended for Afagddu, her most unfortunate and afflicted son. It was her hope to give him some kind of redeeming faculty. Somewhere along the line, Gwion spilled three drops of the cauldron's contents on his finger, which was hot and burned him (burning inspiration?). He instinctively (that is, without thinking!?) put his finger in his mouth, tasted the potion, and was inspired with all the knowledge and wisdom of the cauldron. This enraged Ceridwen and cheated Afagddu out of his mother's endowment.
Returning to Nechtan's wife, Boann, who out of curiosity, at best, or out of jealousy, at worst, violated the taboo of approaching the spring. She was deemed guilty of trespassing because her approach to the spring was in bad faith. In her hubris, she defied the taboo even further by walking around the spring widdershins (counterclockwise or "against the sun") three times (threes again). This compounded the crime with disrespect - foolhardy, at best, and malicious, at worst, to insult a force of nature. The spring, outraged at the act of trespass and insult, erupted with a deluge and innodated Boann, thus creating the river and recreating her as its Goddess, forever bound to it.
It may be interesting to note that the River Shannon, the longest river in Ireland, has a similar origin myth. The spring has the same description (i.e.; hazel trees, nuts, salmon, knowledge, inspiration, taboo, etc.). However, the part of Boann is played by the river goddess Sinann. The difference being that Sinann, a modest person who was honestly, and in good faith, seeking wisdom and inspiration, meant no insult. Perhaps this is a reminder that sometimes seeking knowledge only for the sake of knowing, however well intentioned, can bite you on the ass.
Born under the Hazel Tree, you are very perceptive, idealistic, and artistic. Wisdom and creativity are especially important to you. It is thought magical skills and knowledge can be gained from eating Hazel nuts. In addition to being artistic, you have a lively, analytical mind, and can be an inspiring teacher. Imaginative, you tend to be an idealistic, even radical, thinker. You need to express your creativity or you become morbid and introspective.

You Are Most Like Vidar
Vidar is the son of Odin and the giantess Grid (Gridr). He is the God of Silence and Revenge. Vidar may mean, "the Wide-Ruling One". He is also known as Vidar the Valiant and Vidar the Redeemer. He the second strongest of the gods; his twin brother, Vali, who was born expressly to be a slayer of gods, is the strongest. Both of them will survive Ragnarok, the destruction of the world, with about a half a dozen other gods, and rule in the new world when it is recreated. His hall in Asgard is Vidi.
It is during Ragnarok that Odin is killed by the wolf Fenrir. Vidar avenges his father by killing the wolf with his bare hands. He presses one foot on Fenrir's bottom jaw and takes hold of his other jaw to tear the wolf apart.
Vidar is the companion of Balder the Glorious, the God of Light and War or Battle, and, later after Balder's death (who will be reborn after Ragnarok), Vidar becomes the companion of Forsete, Balder's son and God of Justice and Conciliation. Vidar has also been associated with practical wisdom and the hunt. He is the patron of leatherworkers. The wrestling forms known as "Glima", in Iceland, and "Ryggtak", in Norway, are dedicated to him.

Zeus is another Father God. He is the father of both the gods (and goddesses) and of men (and women). In addition to being the ruler of the Greco-Roman Pantheon, he is yet another sky god whose symbol is the eagle and there are many dating back to the common Indo-European pantheon. He is the God of Storms, Thunder and Lightning, and the Destiny of Mankind. He is usually depicted as a strong, robust, and mature man deep in thought. What Greek God are you? (Males Only)
You are Zeus
Zeus is the supreme among all the gods and yet even he is subject to the guidance of Destiny. Through Destiny, Zeus sees everything and knew everything. He hands out swift justice to wrongdoers but he is also be compassionate and protects the weak. He is worshipped as the God of the Sky, Rain, and Thunder.
You Are Most Like Hecate
You are most like the Greek goddess of dark (not necessarily evil - maybe hidden or simply secret) magic. Mysterious and intellectual, you have a good understanding of the world around you. You never just "go along" with things and always do what you want to do, which is not always the right thing but never mind! Interesting, fun, and generally quite friendly, you are a good person to have as a friend.
Hecate is the goddess of the Moon (the Ebony or New Moon, especially), of magic, and of abundance. She is the defender of children, the midwife, and the provider of food and wealth. She is the goddess of the crossroads and some traditions have her as the Goddess of the Underworld. Therefore, like so many gods and goddesses, she has the power of life (birth) and death.
Originally, she was represented as a beautiful woman, clad in a long flowing robe, with burning torches, a knife, and a couple of spectral hounds flanking her. Being a Moon goddess, she has a triple aspect just like the others. She is the Crone and the Maiden, as well. In addition to abundance, she is also the bringer of storms. Over the centuries she has been unfairly and progressively portrayed as a dark goddess. This is a misunderstanding of her power and complexity. When you have a life altering decision to make consult Hecate.

Which Egyptian God are you?
You Are A Spiritualist
Your magic flows from the primal forces of the cosmos. You could be a gentle Healer, a miraculous Prophet, or a spirit-summoning War-mage with the strong link your soul provides to the realms beyond reality. You have preternatural abilities, intuitively sensing the personality of people you meet and discerning events yet to happen. You enhance your aura with meditative pursuits. You are a good judge of character but your idealism or morality can confuse others.
You Are The Mentor
You are akin to Gandalf (Lord of The Rings), Merlin (Arthurian Legend), Obi Wan Kenobi (Star Wars), Aslan (Narnia), Door (Neverwhere), Dumbledore (Harry Potter), and Zeddicus Zu'l Zorander (Wizard's First Rule). You are wise and knowing. You also know that there is not much time left for the Unlikely Hero to defeat The Totally Wicked Villain. Only you know the true motives and past of The Villain, so it is up to you to teach the Unlikely Hero all he has to know but be careful, as you will invariably regret not telling The Unlikely Hero things sooner rather than later. You like teaching and often care very much for others.
You Are The Magician Tarot Card
Magic is the use of the will to effect change in reality. The will is the ability to direct knowledge and experience towards an end goal. The Magician is capable of manipulating his environment because he knows it so well. He effects the thoughts and emotions of those around him. Therefore, the Magician is often thought of as an artist, writing or speaking in a way that strongly influences others. The Magician understands how to bring concepts into form and how to express metaphysical concepts in a physical way. He is seen with the symbols of each suit: a disk, a cup, a sword and a wand. These symbols are each a physical expression of a concept. They are The Magician's tools. Following after The Fool, The Magician acts as a messenger. His planet is Mercury, who is Messenger of the Gods. He brings The Fool into the new world that The Fool seeks. The Magician represents the act of creation. Because he can use his knowledge to form something new, he seems to be able to make a thing appear out of a void.

You Scored As The Magician (I) Card
The Magician represents those aspects of the personality traditionally considered "masculine". He is in control. He knows how things work. He takes action and makes things happen. He operates through the power of Will rather than brute force. The Magician represents the application of knowledge. The Magician creates his desired reality. When this card appears in a Tarot spread, it indicates the attainment of goals through the application of knowledge and Will. If badly aspected in a spread, then this card can represent abuse of power. It can indicate manipulation of others, trickery, and deception.

Which Major Arcana Tarot Card are you?
You Kill With Magic
You are very skilled with magic but have poor fighting skills. However, it does not really matter anyway since it can be as powerful as any other weapons. You are probably misunderstood by people and have some pain inside you. You are not the kind of person to start a fight but if you are
provoked you will respond. You probably do not have that many friends either, though you might want some. According to you, life is a lonely journey and you try not to care too much. Most people who are witches, or anything similar, are thought to be evil and want to see all people suffer. However. that is not true; you do not feel that much joy in seeing others in pain. You are probably very peaceful and quiet, when left alone.

It's been a juggernaut, but "IF THE RAINS DON'T CLEANSE" (my novel about my parents' experiences as schoolteachers in 1950s Africa) is finally available on Amazon.com. In fact, it's selling so well it's marked "out of stock" this holiday weekend!
It's getting strong reviews and a grown-up readership -- I'm thrilled.
I invite you to visit my MySpace blog to read an excerpt.
