| About The Wild Zeros |
|
The Wild Zeros are a band from Jakarta, Indonesia, who take elements of country and folk music and filter them through a cocktail of bad drug and relationship experiences to create their own unique psychedelic sound.
The Zeros were first formed in Jakarta in 2004 after country & western singer Christopher Lambert mistook drummer Bob Hasan for a member of the popular band The Brandals, when the pair met up in a Menteng music bar. Bob, who lacked the money to to get into the gig, had impersonated the Brandals drummer to get through the door and Lambert, who was then still a newcomer to the Jakarta music scene, was taken in by the ruse. Plying Bob with alcohol, Lambert was impressed by Bob's lurid tales of life in a rock band, and he soon invited him to form a side project. Seeing an opportunity for more free beer, Bob quickly agreed. Lambert did not realize his mistake until several months later when he met the Brandals' real drummer but by this time Bob had already moved into to his small apartment.
In late 2004, the pair were joined by a third member, the quiet, inward, A. Tommy Suharto, on bass, who was an important influence on the group's future sound. Tommy also happened to own a hairdressers in Central Jakarta, where he styled the band's hair and did their stage makeup.
The Wild Zeros then played several Jakarta gigs and created some interest among the communities in Jalan Jaksa. Flushed by their early success, A. Tommy was convinced the band had promise and alerted his friend, local indie music producer and record label head David T. Zero. encouraging him to join the group as its guitarist.
Intrigued by Suharto's enthusiastic tales of Lambert's songwriting ability, T. Zero took time out from his busy schedule to attend several practice sessions with the group. Sufficiently taken by what he later told reporters was the band's "promise of something or other", he agreed to play with them "... when I have nothing else to do."
After several line-up changes and many performances later, the band continues to play in Jakarta. It now comprises Lambert (guitar and vocals), along with two new occasional members, Joshiro Teriyaki (bass) and Adink De Menace (keyboards) while Bob Hasan remains the group's part-time drummer. The increasing popularity of David T. Zero's record label means he is no longer a permanent member of the band but still guests at some gigs. A. Tommy Suharto left the group in 2007 to pursue a career in hairdressing.
