Will Buckingham's Interests
|
| General | Writing words, reading words other people have written, philosophy, travel, music (play classical guitar reasonably, trying to learn blues and jazz piano...)
| | Music |
Being a guitarist, anything with duende for guitar suits me well. Tom Waits never fails. Cheery Leonard Cohen occasionally does, but you can't help loving him. Went to see Gogol Bordello recently: fabulous. Otherwise listening to all kinds of bits and pieces: Jolie Holland, The Magnetic Fields, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Joanna MacGregor playing wild piano music, Isobel Campbell breathing softly along with Mark Lanegan, and whilst on the Campbells, Camera Obscura, not forgetting Neil Hannon at his bonkers best on Promenade and Cassanova, Billy Bragg for those times when I'm still waiting for the great leap forward, honky-tonk piano, the Be Good Tanyas, Bulgarian singing, Manu Chao (but only in the summer), Leadbelly, Camera Obscura, crusty old blues... and so on. | | Movies | I'm a recovering art student (still recovering!), so I suppose I should mention Tarkovsky, particularly Mirror. Quirky indie films - I liked Sideways. Persepolis is one of the more recent films I've seen: superb. | | Television | I don't have a TV. Life's busy enough without one.
| | Books | Too many to list, but here are a few: in fiction Paul Auster, Russell Hoban, Jose Saramago, Mikhail Bulgakov, Jorge Luis Borges, Barthelme, Richard Brautigan, Italo Calvino (how I wish I had written "Invisible Cities"), Tove Jansson's moomin books, Michel Serres (The Troubadour of Knowledge in particular), Levinas, that crafty old devil Heidegger, Lucretius's "On the Nature of the Universe", Dan Dennett, stuff about consciousness or Buddhism or the meeting of the two...

Will Buckingham's Blurbs |
About me:
I'm a novelist based living in Birmingham (UK - not Alabama!). My first novel, Cargo Fever, is now out from Tindal Street Press. This summer I travelled to Bulgaria (thanks to the Arts Council, UK), to research the second novel.
I've been writing for more years than I care to count, but Cargo Feveris the first full-sized novel to see the light of day. It's an ordinary, everyday tale of yeti-smuggling in Indonesia.
The first novel has been receiving some excellent reviews: here's a selection:
Birmingham Post
"Buckingham is a wonderful storyteller and paints a vivid picture of Indonesian life. Without knowing it, the reader is quickly drawn in and learns a lot about the traditional ways of life there… but it is his humour and his lively style that ensure the pages just keep on turning. Another triumph for this small Birmingham publisher."
Publishing News
A lively and exotic adventure novel, thronging with picaresque characters, raucous magic and unfamiliar customs.”
UC Magazine
Buckingham skilfully weaves together his disparate narrative strands, maintaining suspense through frequent shifts of perspective, before bringing the story to a satisfying conclusion. The culture clash between East and West is treated throughout with a deft satirical touch, resulting in a novel that is gripping, thought provoking and entertaining in equal measure.
Raw Edge Magazine
"Buckingham weaves and intricate storyline and tells a good tale. His intimate knowledge of his subject shows through in his light and confident touch."
Transition Tradition
"Cargo Fever explores the hoary old subject of a westerner’s experience of a tribal culture with an unusual exuberance and intelligence…. Refreshing in its determination to revive an apparently stagnant literary genre. The sheer ambition of Cargo Fever marks Buckingham out as a name to watch."
Jonathan Davidson – Birmingham Book Festival
Like Graham Greene on a cheerful day…
The next novel is set between Bulgaria and Paris, and is about a 19th century guitarist. I've been playing the guitar since I was about ten, and I've been planning to write about the guitar for years...
Visit my website at http://www.willbuckingham.com I've also got a Writing Blog and a blog for wayward thoughts on Buddhism.
I'm recently finished a PhD in philosophy. Mainly phenomenology - Husserl, Heidegger, Levinas and co. Roughly speaking it's to do with storytelling and phenomenology.

Who I'd like to meet:
Writers, readers, anyone involved with writing or publishing or reading good quality words, philosophy fans, friendly people, people who think about life and like questions more than answers.
Do feel free to leave a comment, but please don't just stick up some whopping great jpeg image of a promotional flyer as a comment (small and discreet will be tolerated!) It completely throws out the formatting of the page, and it's not very polite. Repeat offenders will be removed from my friends list.
