Alright folks, my new favorite all-instrumental band Snarky Puppy from Denton, TX is about to release their third record. You might have seen them at the show back in March we played together with hard-hitting, NYC nu-jazz sensation Rudder. I've gotten to be friends with these guys over the past year, and I am continually inspired by their music and their optimistic, unyielding philosophical approach to delivering real art to the public, at all costs. I played pedal steel and Dobro on the title track of their new release, "Bring Us The Bright,", which also features up and coming violin prodigy Zach Brock (Stanley Clarke) and G.R.A.M.M.Y. Award-winning producer/multi-instrumentalist Robert “Sput” Searight. The whole record is an amazing work of art which features a slew of great musicians including veteran keyboardist and Miles Davis alumnus Bernard Wright and G.R.A.M.M.Y. Award-winning funk-master Bobby Sparks. Making music this great is not only challenging intellectually and creatively, but it's even harder financially due to lack of mass-public support. Please show your support for Mike and the guys, and for honest, creative, innovative music in general, by purchasing some copies for you and your friends!
"Bring Us the Bright is Snarky Puppy's most ambitious, eclectic, and hard-hitting release to date. It features 8 tracks from 5 different composers and a slew of guest artists including violin prodigy Zach Brock, "Lefthand" Kevin Williams, Bobby Sparks, Jose Aponte, Jorge Ginorio, Mark Lettieri, and William Barnes, and particularly highlights the talents of SP members Bernard Wright, Bill Laurance, and Robert "Sput" Searight. From klezmer to hip hop to Brazilian funk, this is by far the best representation of Snarky Puppy's live energy and spontaneity."
HEY YA'LL MY FAVORITE GOSPEL GROUP JUST PUT OUT A GREAT NEW RECORD AND I'M ON IT!
I'm playing my Martin 000 on the track "Nothing Goes Unnoticed" which is a tribute to the victims of the Virginia Tech tragedy, and it also features Dave P Moore (Blues Old Stand) on harmonica. My bandmates Tim George, Emery Kidd, and Marquita Anthony are on the whole record and I highly recommend it. The project was led and produced by my Dr. Kevin P. Turner and also features Eric Essex, Sean Michael Ray, Anthony Williams, and many more. I've been playing with these guys for many years now, and I can personally attest to their supreme badness...Do yourself a favor and order a copy now! Search for the tune or The UAB Gospel Choir on iTunes for $9.99, or click here for CDBaby:
A commentor on CDBaby summed this inspiring energetic record up best: "This project is off the chains, from the musicians, directors, and choir, are slamming with the vocals. Awesome soloists, a nice genre of different gospel music. Slow ballads, praise and worship tunes, roller skating music, and energetic stepping pieces. You won't be disappointed for purchasing."
William Barnes is a composer, producer, and performer who combines deep American roots sensibilities with 21st century influences into his own unique blend of modern, soulful pop-art music. Barnes was born in 1978 in Montgomery Alabama and has been working in the extremely fertile and funky Southeastern music scene since the age of 13. He established himself as a powerful soloist, an in-demand working musician, and a veteran of the "chitllin circuit" by the time he reached high school. While performing as a sideman for many artists, he also gained popularity with his own group, Far South Movement in the early 1990's.
In an effort to broaden his musical vocabulary and abilities, he went on to study at several music schools including Boston's Berklee College of Music. During this time William honed his craft under the direction of Wayne Krantz, Charles Chapman, Ben Sher, John Baboyan, Henry Panion, and Kevin P. Turner. Barnes soon returned home with a fresh ear to help spread word of the vibrant music scene in Alabama, and to this end he formed the production, promotion, and development company SouthWord Entertainment in 2003.
The past few years have found William reemerging with a slew of new projects and a reawakened sense of artistic confidence and musical urgency, and he remains an in-demand fixture in the SouthEastern music scene. Barnes has appeared on many albums by a diverse range of artists both as producer and musician, most recently laying down tracks for Grammy nominated ARU/Allman Brothers bass innovator Oteil Burbridge, North Texas nu-jazz mavericks Snarky Puppy, nouveau-country/soul singer John Mark Turner (Blues Old Stand), and the prestigious collegiate pioneers The UAB Gospel Choir. He is excited about the long awaited release of his own debut record in the near future, and is currently freelancing full time, teaching private lessons, and hanging out with his wife and their 2 cats and 3 dogs at their farm in rural Alabama.
In the summer of 2009, William joined The Ray Johnston Band and can be heard on the group's debut album "Sweet Tooth," as well as on their Fall 2009 tour. Mark Cuban's HDNet television station is currently filming a 10 episode docu-series about the group. Be on the lookout for "Road Diaries" coming Sunday nights to HDNet in January 2010.

I play bass because the subltey of the role provides a challenge for my intellect that a crude electric guitar simply cannot satisfy....or maybe just cause all the guitar players were better than me....
