The 13-song recording was produced and recorded by Kurt Gellersted and Brooke Fox and mixed by Brooke Fox at By The Bridge Recording in Williamsburg. Gellersted and Fox, who also served as musical directors for the original production, brought the entire cast into their home studio along with fellow band members Justin Hosek on Bass and Andrew Potenza on Drums.
The artwork includes a fold-out poster map illustrated by Aaron Meshon (Rolling Stone, NYTimes, RISD) entitled “Williamsburg: The Coolest Neighborhood in America” which features the show’s characters and their hipster hang-outs. Photography was provided by Jonathan Grey and George Rand. The album was mastered by Dan Shike at Tone & Volume Mastering in Nashville, TN.
WILLIAMSBURG! was originally produced as part of the 2007 New York International Fringe Festival – FringeNYC with performances on August 11, 12, 13, 19 and 24 at The Village Theatre (158 Bleecker Street). Directed and choreographed by Deborah Wolfson.
The design team included sets by Michael Wilson Morgan, costumes by Jennifer Rogien (A Very Merry Unauthorized Children’s Scientology Pageant), lighting by Alison May and sound by Gennaro Marletta III.
WILLIAMSBURG! THE MUSICAL is a hilarious pop/rock parody of Brooklyn’s over-hyped hipster ‘hood. A suicidal trust-funder encounters a disenchanted Chasidic Jew in the shadow of the Williamsburg Bridge. On their potholed road to love, they battle a greedy real estate agent whose diabolical plan to overtake the neighborhood spawns an army of zombie-like hipsters. Will the unlikely heroes of Williamsburg band together to save the sub-borough? Or will gentrification reign?
Piper Paris and Shlomo Zildenberg, the unlikely couple of hipster and Chasid, are played by Allison Guinn (Hair) and Evan Shyer with Nicola Barber as the dastardly real estate developer, Amina Snatch. Completing the cast are Maranda Barskey, Roberto Carrasco, Cyana Cook, Jessica Crouch, Adam Enright, Erin Hall, Colin Israel, Anna Jayne Marquardt, Terry Palasz, Damien Deshaun Smith and Jesse Teeters.
With songs like “One Stop (To Excitement),” “Craigslist Hookup,” “Peter Luger Lullaby” and “Million Dollar Crackhouse,” this timely roast of the Burg juxtaposes Missed Connections and “Hipstory Lessons” to comically exploit the cultural mish-mash of the coolest neighborhood in America.
